Role of Very Fast Transients in HV Transformer Bushing Failures and Their Remedial Measures

2026 · ITEGAM- Journal of Engineering and Technology for Industrial Applications (ITEGAM-JETIA) · Vol 12, pp. 1584-1590 · 0 citations

Abstract

Without HV Bushings, large transformers are unthinkable and failure in any of the bushing results in transformer failure as well. Bushing failures are rarely analyzed separately from the transformer failure. The approach laid out in this paper is to expand bushing failure research so that besides terminal transformer failures, incipient failures (non-transformer-damaging) are also looked up to. Bushing failure mechanism in the presence of very fast transients (VFT) during AIS bus bar switching lead to certain failure scenario, that is been described and supported by a case study. Mitigation measures for such failure mechanism are also suggested.

Analysis of VFTO and Its Mitigation in a GIS through Additional Earthing Grid

Very Fast Transient Overvoltages (VFTOs) are one of the major insulation stress phenomena encountered in Gas Insulated Substations (GIS). VFTOs are generated primarily during disconnector switching operations and are characterized by extremely steep wavefronts, high frequency oscillations, and short durations. These tr...

Bridging theory and practice: systematic review into power transformer winding failures in South Africa

Due to the ongoing load shedding in South Africa, the incidence of power transformer failures has increased significantly, making the enhancement of grid-connected transformer design a critical concern. Historically, the South African utility grid has relied on conventional technologies; however, under load-shedding co...

Analysis of the Impact of Current Transformer Polarity on the Performance of Directional Protection Elements in Protective Relays

This paper demonstrates that the polarity of the current transformer (CT) is a critical determinant of directional overcurrent protection selectivity. Analytical modeling and hardware-in-loop testing confirm that a reversed CT polarity introduces a predictable 180° phase shift in the measured current. This phase invers...

Potentials and Limitations on Different Busbar Protections in Industrial Applications

Busbar protection is a cornerstone of industrial power system reliability, as failures at switchgear can propagate rapidly and extend restoration times. The Taiwan"303 blackout"in 2022, initiated by a short-circuit fault and aggravated by CT supervision lockout, illustrates the severe consequences of inadequate designs...

Detection Methods and Condition Assessment of High-Voltage Bushings: A Systematic Review

As core connection components in power transmission systems, high-voltage bushings operate under extreme conditions for extended periods, including high voltage, high current, elevated ambient temperature, and intense mechanical loads. Under the combined effects of electrical, thermal, and mechanical stresses, internal...

Analysis of the Application of Single-Pole Auto-Reclosing on 70 kV Transmission Networks Using High Resistance Grounding

Single-phase-to-ground faults are the most common disturbances in 70 kV transmission systems and are generally temporary. However, the continued use of Three-Pole Auto-Reclosing (TPAR) causes all phases to be disconnected even when only one phase is affected, which reduces system reliability and continuity of supply. T...
