Partial Discharge Characteristics Under High Frequency High Voltage Stress and Their Impact on Solid Insulating Materials

Jul 2026 · Electrical Insulation Conference · pp. 1-5 · 0 citations · 22 references

Abstract

Insulation systems are increasingly exposed to combinations of high electric fields and high frequencies simultaneously. This can be linked to the growing integration of power electronic components and the ongoing development of power semiconductors. This trend also influences the occurrence of partial discharge (PD) phenomena, which can lead to higher stress when taking high-frequency components into account. Since the relevant and possible frequencies are steadily increasing, this work presents general investigation of PD characteristics for a wide frequency range up to 2 MHz and their impact on different insulating materials. The investigations have shown that the PD amplitudes increase with increasing frequency and that the number of PDs rises disproportionately. As a result, the intensity of PDs increases rapidly, reducing the lifetimes of the materials from over a year at 50 Hz, to days or minutes in the kHz range, and to seconds at 2 MHz.

Influence of non-sinusoidal voltages on electromechanical stresses in cross-linked polyethylene insulation with micro-defects of power electrical cables

Introduction. Power cables with cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation have significant advantages over traditional oil-filled ones, which have led to their widespread use in high-power electrical networks of all developed countries. However, such cables are increasingly forced to operate under conditions of non-s...

Insulation Breakdown Strength Under AC and DC Stress Using Different Dielectric Materials: An Empirical Synthesis

The reliability and efficiency of high-voltage power systems are critically dependent on the performance of insulating materials, which prevent electrical failures by withstanding high voltages. Insulation breakdown occurs when the dielectric strength of a material is exceeded, leading to system faults and reduced o...

Hidden influence of external discharges and plasma expansion on electrical diagnostics and microdischarge behavior in coaxial air dielectric barrier discharges

Phenomenon of concurrent external discharges and plasma expansion can occur in practical coaxial dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) systems, yet their impact on electrical diagnostics and discharge behavior remains insufficiently understood. To investigate these effects, a coaxial atmospheric-pressure air DBD operated...

Influence of Creepage Distance and Pollution Severity on Flashover Voltage and Parallel Discharge Mechanisms in Glass Insulators

This study investigates the impact of creepage distance and insulator geometry on the AC flashover voltage (FOV) and parallel-discharge characteristics of flat-glass insulator models under uniform pollution conditions. Experimental tests were conducted using a plane-plane electrode configuration with pollution conducti...

Influence of mechanical vibration on typical oil–paper insulation partial discharge defects in power transformers

Mechanical vibration is a common operating condition of power transformers and may interact with electrical stress, thereby influencing partial discharge (PD) behavior in oil–paper insulation. To investigate this influence, an electro-mechanical coupled experimental platform was developed. Two typical PD defects, namel...

Frequency-Dependent Surface-Discharge Lifetime and PRPD Failure Signatures of Polyimide Insulation Under High-Frequency Sinusoidal Voltage

Polyimide (PI) film is a widely used insulation material in high-frequency power equipment, yet its frequency–lifetime relation and terminal discharge features have rarely been resolved together over a complete ageing trajectory. This paper reports three contributions. First, a condition-specific frequency–lifetime rel...
