Abstract
Affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) is a promising chirp-based waveform for high-mobility and underwater acoustic communications. However, underwater acoustic channels are inherently wideband and characterized by timescaling effects, where Doppler distortion cannot be accurately modeled as a simple frequency shift. Instead, Doppler time scaling effect spreads an embedded pilot over a delay- and scale-dependent support region in the discrete affine Fourier (DAF) domain, making conventional narrowband pilot-guard designs insufficient. This paper proposes a sensing-compatible embedded-pilot AFDM frame structure for wideband time-scaled channel estimation. Specifically, the guard region is constructed by using the principle of stationary phase (POSP) to predict the receive-side support of the wideband pilot response across admissible channel delay and Doppler scale. Based on the proposed frame structure, we develop a POSP-guided energy projection (POSP-EP) method along with an orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP)-based scheme specifically developed for the wideband channel estimation. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed frame structure achieves effective pilot-response coverage with reduced leakage into the data region. Moreover, the proposed scheme improves both normalized mean square error (NMSE) performance and bit error rate (BER), while preserving the desired properties of wideband ambiguity function under random data transmission conditions.
Affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) has emerged as a promising waveform for high-mobility communications owing to its ability to exploit multipath diversity. However, channel state information (CSI) acquisition remains challenging in channels with fractional delay and Doppler and an unknown number of propagat...

Affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) is a promising waveform for future high-mobility communications due to its Doppler robustness and diversity gain. However, existing continuous-time AFDM relies on chirp-dependent wideband receive filtering, which increases noise power and causes channel-energy leakage. In t...

Accurate wideband channel estimation is a key enabler for millimeter-wave (mmWave) integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems. In the narrowband scenario, the Transformed Spatial Domain Channel Estimation (TSDCE) method was previously shown to provide fast and accurate angle estimation with substantially lower...

Conventional Fourier-based orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) modulation performs poorly in doubly selective underwater acoustic (UWA) channels because severe fractional Doppler leakage degrades detection reliability and forces the use of computationally expensive iterative equalizers. The purpose of this work is t...

In doubly selective underwater acoustic channels, time-varying multipath and Doppler spread destroy the orthogonality among orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) subcarriers. As a result, the least squares (LS) estimates at pilot positions are affected by noise, inter-carrier interference (ICI), and spectra...

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is a newly-emerging technique for terrestrial 5G wireless systems. By shifting to the mmWave frequency band, a much larger bandwidth can be achieved. The resulting high-frequency transmission loss can be mitigated with the aid of a large-scale array (LSA) and angular processing. A...
