The persistent disparity between insecticide-treated (ITN) net ownership and actual nightly utilization limits the effectiveness of malaria prevention strategies in Nigeria, and intervention strategies must pair distribution with targeted behavioral communication and structural improvements.

Abstract

The persistent disparity between insecticide-treated (ITN) net ownership and actual nightly utilization limits the effectiveness of malaria prevention strategies in Nigeria. This study assessed ITN coverage, the social determinants of its use, and its direct association with confirmed malaria infection among febrile patients in Osun State. A facility-based cross-sectional study enrolled 200 febrile patients across six Local Government Areas, serving as a focused sentinel investigation. Data regarding sociodemographics and net utilization were collected via a structured questionnaire. Malaria infection was confirmed using a nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) reference standard. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression, with multicollinearity assessed via Variance Inflation Factors (VIF). ITN ownership was 74.5%, while actual utilization was 52.0%, yielding a 22.5 percentage-point gap. Higher education (aOR=2.51), richest wealth quintile (aOR=3.02), and mass media exposure (aOR=1.89) independently predicted net use. PCR-confirmed malaria positivity was 23.5%. Net non-use (aOR=4.12) and open eaves (aOR=1.92) strongly predicted infection. Socioeconomic factors drive a significant utilization gap, resulting directly in higher malaria prevalence among non-users. Intervention strategies must pair distribution with targeted behavioral communication and structural improvements.

USE OF INSECTICIDE-TREATED NETS (ITNs) AND MALARIA PREVENTION PRACTICES AMONG URBAN HOUSEHOLDS IN KADUNA METROPOLIS, NIGERIA

Malaria persists as the dominant vector-borne disease in Nigeria despite more than a decade of intensified control efforts built around insecticide-treated net (ITN) distribution. This study investigated the use of ITNs and malaria prevention practices among urban households in Kaduna Metropolis, with specific attentio...

Predictors of Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net Ownership among Households in Gombe Metropolis, North-east Nigeria

Malaria continues to be a major public health concern worldwide, with sub-Saharan Africa carrying the highest burden of illness and death. Nigeria contributes a large share of global cases and fatalities, particularly among children under five years. Although long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are a proven and wide...

Critical Gaps in Long-lasting Insecticide-treated Net Ownership and Usage Among University Students in Tanzania: An Outcome Evaluation Study to Unveil Key Determinants

Introduction: Long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) are recommended as an effective way to prevent malaria, especially in malaria-endemic areas such as Tanzania. Because of this, the Tanzania National Malaria Strategic Plan (NMSP) 2021-2025 aimed to ensure universal access to LLINs. This study evaluated ownersh...

Protective association between recent insecticide-treated bed net use and falciparum malaria in three provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Recent research highlights threats to the effectiveness of insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) against malaria transmission. This cross-sectional study (N=2819) investigated associations between bed net usage and malaria rapid diagnostic test (RDT) positivity among those presenting with malaria symptoms in three provin...

Impact of mass distribution on insecticide-treated net coverage and usage in three high burden malaria provinces of Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea (PNG) completed five nation-wide mass distributions of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) in the last 15 years. Despite this considerable achievement, malaria cases in PNG are rising. Recent national-level surveys indicate unusually low ITN coverage and usage indicators, raising concerns about the continu...
