Expression of progesterone receptor as a prognostic marker in ovarian cancer
Abstract
Background: To study the expression and functional impact of PRs in ovarian cancers and to discuss the implications of PR positivity in ovarian cancer. Materials and Methods: Prospective observational study, conducted on 64 patients undergoing upfront primary surgery for ovarian cancers: 18-75 years of age. Data of patients who were operated for upfront primary debulking surgery between October 2016 -May 2018 (20 months). StatisticalAnalysis: StatisticalanalysiswasperformedusingIBMSPSSversion20.0software. TostudytheassociationofPRwithage, stage, cytoreduction Pearson Chi square test with Fisher’s exact test is used. Kaplan Meier Survival analysis was done to find the overall survival. Results: Among 64 ovarian carcinoma patients, 56.25% were PR-positive, serous histology predominated (73.4%), and over half presented in stage III. PR status showed no significant association with tumour type, stage, or surgical outcome. However, PR negativity was significantly associated with recurrence (P = 0.009). Conclusion : Progesterone receptor (PR) expression showed no association with tumour type, stage, or surgical outcome, but PR negativity was significantly linked to recurrence. These findings suggest that PR status may serve as a useful prognostic marker for identifying patients at higher risk of relapse.
