Sarcopenia seems to be independently associated with increased mortality in patients with pneumonia, and further prospective studies using standardised sarcopenia definitions are necessary for better evidence.
Abstract
Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the association between sarcopenia and mortality in adult patients with pneumonia.
Methodology: PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched from inception to 14 October 2025. Observational studies comparing outcomes between pneumonia patients with and without sarcopenia were included, excluding COVID-19–related studies. Data were pooled using a random-effects model. Subgroup analyses were performed.
Results: Eleven studies (12 datasets) were included. Sarcopenia, defined using CT-based low skeletal muscle mass measures, was significantly associated with increased mortality in pneumonia (OR: 1.03 95% CI 1.02–1.05, p = 0.00001). Between-study variability was substantial: I² = 87.6%. Sensitivity analyses confirmed the stability of the results. Subgroup analyses demonstrated significant associations across most locations, study designs, and follow-up periods, although not all subgroups reached statistical significance.
Conclusions: Sarcopenia seems to be independently associated with increased mortality in patients with pneumonia. Further prospective studies using standardised sarcopenia definitions are necessary for better evidence.
Sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity were both significantly associated with hypertension, however, substantial heterogeneity and the observational nature of the evidence warrant cautious interpretation and preclude causal inference.

Background and objectives Sarcopenia is a recognised determinant of adverse health outcomes yet remains insufficiently quantified in India. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the prevalence of sarcopenia and document the diagnostic criteria used across community and hospital-based population...

Objective: Sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity (SO) are geriatric syndromes characterized by reduced skeletal muscle mass and impaired muscle strength, whose specific biomarkers and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to conduct a meta-analysis and literature review on the associations between biomarke...
Abstract Objectives To determine the pooled prevalence of sarcopenia phenotypes and synthesise the evidence on factors associated with sarcopenia among adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in India. Design Systematic review and meta-analysis. Data sources PubMed, Embase, Scopus and Web of Science were searched f...

In rural Ama-zonian communities, sarcopenia in older adults is associated with functional dependence and its early identi-fication is fundamental to prevent functional dependence and guide comprehensive health interventions.
