Kontribusi Kitab Kuning dalam Menanamkan Sejarah Islam di Pondok Pesantren Ats Tsaqofiy Tanjung Morawa
Abstract
This study aims to analyze the contribution of classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning) in instilling an understanding of Islamic history among students at Ats Tsaqofiy Islamic Boarding School, Tanjung Morawa. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving the school principal, Tarikh teacher, and students. Data analysis consisted of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, while data validity was examined through source and technique triangulation. The findings show that Islamic history learning through kitab kuning is conducted through opening activities, student reading of the text, translation, teacher explanation, the use of instructional charts, question-and-answer sessions, and discussion. The main text used is Itmāmul Wafā’ fī Sīrah al-Khulafā’. The values cultivated include leadership, Muslim unity, patience, sacrifice, sincerity, perseverance, tawakkul, and exemplary conduct of the Prophet Muhammad and his companions. Kitab kuning contributes to students’ understanding because the historical material is studied from the classical text, explained directly by the teacher, and deepened through classroom interaction. The main challenge is the variation in students’ ability to read and understand unvowelled Arabic texts and their mastery of nahwu and sharaf. Thus, kitab kuning functions not only as a source of historical knowledge but also as a medium for value internalization and character formation.
