IROH: Insightful Ranking Of Humor using Multi-Stage Hybrid Retrieval with Rationale-Distilled LLM Judges for JOKER 2026 Track Task 1 English

Our team, VANGUARD, presents IROH (Insightful Ranking of Humor), a three-stage retrieval system for JOKER Task 1 English at CLEF 2026, achieving first place on the leaderboard with 0.6347 MAP. Our pipeline combines hybrid sparse-dense retrieval, cross-encoder reranking, and a LoRA-adapted Large Language Model judge ensemble. We employ Gemma 4 to generate query-aware rationales under two prompt strategies, generic and typed, and produce up to four types of structured hard negatives for training data construction. Through an ablation across three cross-encoder architectures, four dense embedders, and eight judge configurations, our key findings are threefold: (1) the rationale-distilled judge is the primary driver of ranking quality, whereas appending rationales to the first-stage index contributes negligibly; (2) structured hard negatives degrade generalisation in nearly all configurations despite inflating local validation scores; and (3) across the components we ablate, the lighter, better-calibrated model is competitive with or stronger than its larger counterpart, with the generic-rationale Qwen2.5-7B judge (0.6055 MAP) outperforming every Gemma-4-31B configuration, and the advantage of generic over typed rationales is concentrated almost entirely in the smaller model.

Structural Jailbreaks Generalize but Do Not Compound: A cross-provider and multilingual study of Involuntary In-Context Learning

Aligned language models fail under two independent pressures: the structural jailbreak class recently formalized as Involuntary In-Context Learning (IICL), which reframes a harmful request as the final missing cell of a data-labeling task completed by pattern rather than judged as content; and the erosion of safety alignment outside English. A natural hypothesis is that these compound. We test it directly. Using a deterministic IICL operator and a StrongREJECT-style rubric judge, we red-team two Google Gemini models on two benchmarks, a 30 general-harm behaviours from HarmBench and 30 financial-abuse behaviours from FinProof, each under a single-shot baseline and under IICL in four languages (English, Spanish, Hindi, Arabic). First, IICL generalizes to a second provider and is worse in finance: it lifts attack success from<=6.7% to 80-90% on HarmBench and 97-100% on FinProof, an order of magnitude above the<=24% its introducing study reported on OpenAI's GPT-5.4. Second, against the hypothesis, forcing the IICL output into a non-English language does not stack the two weaknesses, it attenuates the attack. Eleven of twelve non-English conditions score below their English baseline (sign test, p~0.003), the lone exception a ceiling tie near 100%; on the stronger model's financial set Arabic collapses from 100% to 33%. We attribute this to a relevance curse: once structure has unlocked compliance, the models produce lower-quality harmful content in lower-resource languages, which a substance-grading judge scores as partial. The pattern replicates under an independent non-Google judge (Cohen's kappa=0.86, 377 paired verdicts), and 76.6% of non-English responses were verified in-language. Jailbreak vulnerabilities are therefore not additive; the dominant residual risk is the English structural attack, most acute for financial abuse, not a multilingual one.

Bridging Data, Reasoning, and Alignment: A Unified Framework for Context-Aware Instruction-Following TTS

The ISCSLP 2026 CoT-TTS Challenge requires TTS systems to generate Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning from dialogue history before synthesizing contextually appropriate speech. While the official baseline establishes a unified architecture, it remains constrained by limited contextual comprehension, weak instruction fidelity, and suboptimal audio quality. We present a systematic optimization pipeline to address these limitations. First, we develop a data process framework that cleans raw data via FullSubNet denoising, Qwen3-ASR re-transcription, and Qwen3.5-35B-A3B-based history-CoT consistency analysis, while distilling 545K high-fidelity instruction samples using Qwen3-TTS and Seed-VC under strict quality filtration. Second, we propose a Context-Aware Direct Preference Optimization (CA-DPO) method. By employing a cascaded filtering strategy, ASR prescreening, LLM tournament ranking, and speaker similarity verification, we obtain high-confidence preference pairs that significantly enhance holistic ``Context$\rightarrow$CoT$\rightarrow$Speech''consistency during DPO training. Third, we establish an evaluation method featuring a 500-sample test set and an LLM-as-Judge framework to independently assess reasoning and execution fidelity. Experiments demonstrate that our system significantly outperforms the baseline across all objective and subjective metrics, validating our data governance and alignment strategies.

Right Tool, Right Job: Native-Language Evaluation, Tokenizer Sensitivity, and Methodological Findings from a French-Only BabyLM

We submit M\'eTRON-FR, a 125M GPT-2 pretrained on 92.47M words of French, to the BabyLM 2026 Strict track. It scores 85.97 +/- 0.17% on QFrBLiMP (a native Quebec-French benchmark of grammatical minimal pairs) and 62.80% on the BabyLM-weighted leaderboard. A cross-lingual GLUE (General Language Understanding Evaluation) protocol that combines French task-data translation with rank-16 LoRA (Low-Rank Adaptation) produces a sharp task-type gradient: relational tasks gain measurably, while world-knowledge tasks regress. Bilingual Lexicon Induction aligns the French embeddings to GPT-2 at p@1 = 68.84 +/- 8.61%, 18X above chance, suggesting cross-lingual alignment tracks acquired grammatical competence rather than training duration. An ablation study shows that single-token zero-shot scoring is dominated by tokenizer and template artifacts at the child scale, motivating tokenizer-swap sensitivity, placebo-controlled prompting, and native-language minimal-pair benchmarks as standard diagnostics.

CoVA-SFT: A Large-Scale Dataset for Chain of Visual Abstractions

Chain-of-thought (CoT) reasoning has dramatically improved large language models (LLMs) by allowing them to decompose problems into intermediate steps. While CoT is widely effective for linguistic tasks, text-only CoT forces models to serialize visual problems into awkward prose. Although architectural solutions exist to process visual inputs, the community lacks a massive, multi-step, self-corrected dataset to teach models how to build and maintain internal visual workspaces when solving purely textual reasoning problems. To address this limitation, we introduce CoVA-SFT, a highly structured corpus of 51.9K samples containing over 222K multimodal reasoning steps across 5 distinct layout families and 17 complex tasks, and CoVA-Bench, a companion benchmark of 1,700 held-out test samples spanning the same tasks for reproducible evaluation. By providing explicit rationale formulations, agentic renderings, and verification loops, CoVA-SFT teaches multimodal language models to interleave text and visual abstractions. We validate the dataset by demonstrating that models fine-tuned on CoVA-SFT outperform all interleaved CoT baselines by more than 2x on average on CoVA-Bench, though they still fall short of strong text-only CoT baselines, highlighting open challenges for future work.
