Methane Emissions from Postmeter Residential Natural Gas Infrastructure: Integrating Existing Data to Inform California’s Statewide Inventory

Abstract

This study compiles, synthesizes and analyzes existing measurements of methane emissions from residential postmeter natural gas infrastructure, including (1) all infrastructure within a home under quiescent conditions, (2) pilot lights as discrete sources, (3) sustained combustion of main appliance burners, and (4) transient emissions during ignition and extinguishment. Quiescent leak measurements in 64 houses and emissions from 39 pilots and 509 appliances, mostly for cooking, water heating and space heating, are combined with usage estimates to calculate annual emissions by appliance, housing type, and statewide in California. Per appliance, tankless and storage water heaters have the highest annual emissions (mean estimates of 2456 and 395 g CH4 yr–1, respectively) and the average pilot emits 355 g CH4 yr–1. Statewide residential postmeter emissions are estimated at 32.1 (90% CI: 21.0–52.9) Gg CH4 yr–1, improving a prior estimate from the same quiescent data, 9 pilots and 129 appliances. This postmeter estimate is 2.2% of statewide methane emissions. This work also advances knowledge through improved estimates of pilot emissions, which account for 23% of quiescent and 15% of total residential; adding transients, estimated at 11% of total; and providing inventories by appliance category and process.

Toxic Air Contaminant Emissions from Residential and Commercial Fossil Gas Appliances: A Systematic Review

Gas appliances are increasingly recognized as sources of indoor toxic air contaminant (TAC) exposure, yet no prior review has systematically synthesized emission factor (EF) data across appliance types and fuels. We reviewed the literature to characterize TAC emissions from residential and commercial gas appliances, id...

Evaluating greenhouse gas emissions from existing buildings in Ulaanbaatar: A web-based inventory system approach

While high income countries are often seen as the primary contributors to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, certain low, lower-middle and upper-middle income countries, such as Mongolia, also play a significant role. Despite Mongolia’s limited industrialization, its heavy reliance on coal-based energy (87%) and su...

Beyond Snapshots: Building Methane Measurement-Informed Inventories for Midstream Oil and Gas Sites in the Appalachian Basin

This paper presents the application of a novel methodology to build a comprehensive Measurement-Informed Inventory (MII) by integrating unreported emissions into government inventories. These emissions are often excluded from current regulatory requirements or associated with upset conditions, and are identified throug...

Combustion-derived air pollution and heat from gas-fired appliances in commercial kitchens can exceed health-based guidelines

Commercial kitchens may expose an estimated 15.7 million U.S. workers to elevated air pollution and heat, yet real-world measurements are limited and no prior study has compared commercial kitchens with gas-fired appliances to fully electric ones. We monitored pollutants and temperature in 27 commercial kitchens in Cal...

Life Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions Analysis of Wastewater Sludge Management Practices in the United States

Publicly owned treatment works in the United States generate more than 12 million dry tonnes of wastewater sludge annually, underscoring the need to evaluate current management practices, emissions burden, and sludge-to-energy potential. In this work, we developed a first-of-its-kind facility-level database tracing ∼...

Reducing Air Pollution in Rural Areas with Hybrid Heat Pump Supported by Biomass Boiler

The widespread deployment of low-carbon technologies in households is increasing the need to reduce peak electricity demand on distribution grids. Air-source heat pumps (ASHPs) are efficient heating units, but their performance declines at low ambient temperatures, increasing winter peak demand. In rural areas, limited...
