Abstract

The intelligent substation centralized control system faces three intertwined challenges: mixing event-driven and periodic traffic with different QoS needs, sharing limited inspection hosts among multiple substations, and placing cloud-edge-edge nodes to balance delay and load. This paper tackles them together. We build a distributed heterogeneous wireless model and design a joint uplink-downlink resource allocation that protects urgent traffic. We then propose a latency-utility offloading scheme that levels the computational load across shared hosts. Finally, we develop a cloud-edge-edge construction method with coverage optimization that accounts for both communication distance and load distribution. Simulations show that our framework not only meets delay and reliability targets but also improves channel utilization by 26%, cuts average interference by 3.2 dB, reduces per-task energy by 27%, and maintains a task completion rate above 99.5% under heavy load.

Delay–Energy-Aware Partial Offloading and Coupled Resource Allocation in Hybrid NOMA-MEC Networks: Derivations and Reproducible Evaluation

This paper considers priority-aware partial computation offloading in an uplink mobile edge computing (MEC) network. Devices assigned to different groups occupy orthogonal subbands, whereas devices within each group use power-domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with successive interference cancellation. Task-input size determines the transmitted and processed workload, while queue backlog and application urgency determine the service weight. The Gaussian multiple-access-channel rate region is convex, but the complete allocation problem is not jointly convex in the adopted variables because the offloaded workload is coupled with reciprocal transmission rate and reciprocal edge-CPU allocation. A structure-exploiting block-coordinate projected-gradient method is developed. It combines exact finite-candidate offloading updates, an exact edge-CPU allocation bounded below by deadline feasibility and above by local-path saturation, and an analytical projected power step with Armijo backtracking. For eight users at 23 dBm, pairwise group-based NOMA reduces the weighted delay–energy cost and device energy by 6.18% and 23.44%, respectively, relative to orthogonal access. Queue-aware weighting reduces upper-backlog-quartile delay by 2.69 ms (95% confidence half-width: 0.78 ms) while increasing lower-quartile delay by 8.34 ms (half-width: 2.07 ms). In a paired 15-iteration ablation, generic projected block-coordinate updates have a cost ratio of 1.0098 (half-width: 0.0086) relative to the structured method. A hybrid deep deterministic policy-gradient policy, evaluated over five training seeds, has an 11.77% higher cost while requiring 0.84% of the median online decision time. Of 432 allocations, 392 satisfy the residual-qualified stopping tests and 40 are explicitly reported as iteration-safeguard terminations.

QoS-Aware Load Balancing Scheme for Integrated Terrestrial–Non-Terrestrial Networks

The rapid growth of data- and delay-sensitive applications is driving unprecedented mobile traffic demand, straining terrestrial networks (TNs). Integrated Terrestrial-NonTerrestrial Networks (IT-NTNs), envisioned for 6G, aim to expand coverage and enhance capacity via satellite connectivity. Efficient load balancing across TN and NTN domains remains challenging due to inherent heterogeneity between the networks. This paper proposes a QoS-aware load balancing (QALB) algorithm for IT-NTNs. We introduce a congestion-dependent latency model that captures the coupling between latency and resource utilization, embedded in a unified cost function for user-cell association. The resulting load balancing problem is addressed using a distributed heuristic, with simulation results showing that QALB improves network performance in load distribution, throughput, and QoS satisfaction compared to benchmark schemes.

Edge Computing Control and Task Assignment in Integrated Terrestrial and Non-Terrestrial Networks

Integrated Terrestrial–Non-Terrestrial Networks (ITNTN), which combine terrestrial base stations (BSs), High-Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS), and Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, are key enablers of 6G communication and edge computing (EC) services. However, energy-limited BSs, particularly HAPS and satellites, pose significant sustainability challenges under continuous operation. To address this issue, we propose an on-demand EC server activation framework integrated with intelligent task offloading across ITNTN. A joint optimization problem is formulated to maximize task offloading success while satisfying energy and quality-of-service requirements. To solve it, we propose an online Q-learning policy that adaptively manages task offloading and EC server activation without prior knowledge of traffic dynamics. Simulation results show that the proposed method achieves superior task offloading success and energy efficiency compared to online heuristic and offline metaheuristic baselines. These findings highlight the importance of energyaware On-Off EC control for sustainable ITNTN systems.
