Abstract

This study proposes a dynamic spatiotemporal coordination framework for signalized intersections with variable approach lanes (VALs), aiming to enhance road resource utilization and mitigate demand-supply imbalances. Lane-switching decisions are determined by switching intervals, movement saturation, and average delay, with transitions implemented through coordinated control. The framework adopts dual objectives of minimizing average delay and lane-changing frequency, while analyzing the effect of lane-switching intervals. Detector data on queue lengths and arrival rates are used to construct arrival-departure diagrams, from which an analytical delay formulation is derived to support a delay-based signal timing optimization model. Case studies on a Shanghai intersection using SUMO simulations show that, compared with fixed-time control, the proposed strategy reduces approach delay by 5.0-7.5%, increases throughput by 2.6-9.7%, and decreases overall intersection delay by 2.8-6.0%. These findings demonstrate that the proposed method effectively alleviates congestion and improves efficiency at intersections with unbalanced traffic demand.

A Bi-Level Optimization Framework for Coordinated Control of Variable Directional Lanes and Traffic Signals Considering Route Choice Behavior

The efficient use of existing road infrastructure has become increasingly important in densely developed urban areas where large-scale roadway expansion is constrained. Variable directional lanes (VDLs) and traffic signal control can reallocate roadway capacity and improve network performance. However, most existing st...

Multilayer Perceptron-Based Traffic Signal Timing Optimization for Improved Urban Intersection Performance

Urban traffic signal systems based on fixed-time plans may not adequately respond to variations in traffic demand among signalized intersections, limiting their operational efficiency. This study proposes a data-driven framework based on a Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) to support traffic signal timing optimization in an...

Study of Speed Trajectory Optimization and Dynamic Programming for Various Vehicles Crossing Intersections

Automated systems are considered that can improve traffic order and enable adaptive traffic light timing by optimizing the speed trajectories of vehicles crossing a sequence of intersections. Specifically, we investigate the impact of corridor topology (e.g., green wave duration, phase shifts) on the expected time savi...

Optimization of urban traffic network signal scheduling based on vehicle delay and arterial green wave

Urban traffic congestion has become increasingly severe due to the rapid growth of vehicle demand, making efficient signal control a critical challenge. Existing traffic signal optimization methods typically focus on either isolated intersections or arterial coordination, lacking a unified framework that balances netwo...
