Abstract
The present study investigated the electrodeposition of nickel from hydrate melts comprising highly concentrated aqueous solutions of CaCl

. The objective of this work was to elucidate the manner in which the extreme chloride activity of such melts affected both electrocrystallization kinetics and hydrogen co-deposition. Visible spectra demonstrated that the high chloride concentrations in these solutions transformed symmetric Ni(II) aquo ions into lower-symmetry chloride complexes. Consequently, the kinetics of the Ni electrodeposition process were enhanced, as evidenced by decreased charge-transfer resistance compared with that associated with a conventional Watts bath. The Ni electrodeposited from these hydrate melts exhibited a random crystallographic orientation whereas a {100} preferred orientation was obtained from the Watts bath. Thermal desorption spectroscopy indicated the substantial co-deposition, or occlusion, of atomic hydrogen in the form of vacancy-hydrogen clusters in the resulting Ni films. This co-deposition occurred despite a current efficiency of nearly 100%. Interestingly, enhanced hydrogen co-deposition together with the suppression of gaseous H

evolution were previously observed during the electrodeposition of other metals and appear to be characteristic of electrodeposition from chloride-based hydrate melts.
In this work, we synthesized a nickel-supported tungsten oxide composite (WOx/Ni) by chemically reducing Ni (II) ions in the presence of WO3·H2O to develop an efficient electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)...

While electroplating is widely used for preparing soft magnetic films, reducing its environmental impact remains a key challenge. As an eco-friendly alternative, we recently developed a gel plating method for Ni films. In the present study, chloride- and sulfate-based gel electrolytes were compared to clarify the origi...

Developing electrocatalysts that retain high activity under concentrated alkaline electrolyte, elevated temperature, and large current density remains challenging. Here, a hierarchical NiCoMn-NiN electrode was constructed by coupling a porous Ni3N framework with an amorphous Mn-containing Ni-Co hydroxide/oxyhydroxide-l...

Pure-water membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) represent a promising strategy to eliminate (bi)carbonate salt precipitation for electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R). However, the absence of alkali metal cations fundamentally restricts CO2 activation and intermediate stabilization, thereby reducing catalytic performa...

The electrochemical behavior of the CuSO4–thiourea system was investigated by cyclic voltammetry in aqueous hydrochloric and sulfuric acid electrolytes using fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass electrodes at room temperature. Electrodeposition experiments were conducted under both direct-current (constant-potential) a...

This study aimed to develop a highly efficient and stable non-noble metal electrocatalyst to overcome the slow kinetics of the
hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) during water splitting. To achieve this, a rapid two-step fabrication strategy was employed:
solvothermal deposition of an Fe-based material onto a Ni foam, fo...
