Abstract

This paper presents the results of evaluating 128 introgressive spring bread wheat lines developed at the Federal Agricultural Research Center of the South-East for resistance to race Ug99 (TTKSK) of the stem rust pathogen Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici and its biotypes under natural infection pressure at the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI). As a result of the evaluation, 26 lines were identified that combine immunity (10 lines) or moderate resistance (16 lines) to Ug99 with field resistance to the Saratov pathogen population and seedling resistance to Russian populations of P. graminis f. sp. tritici. Using molecular markers, the effective resistance genes Sr25, Sr28, and Sr35 were identified in the Ug99-resistant lines, in combinations Sr25 + Sr31, Sr25 + Sr28, and Sr25 + Sr35. The results of virulence analysis of Russian P. graminis f. sp. tritici populations from 2017–2025 confirm that race Ug99 has not yet been introduced into the Volga region, and the Sr31 gene remains the most effective against local populations. The main drawback of the resistant introgressive lines is reduced grain yield; however, lines with increased yield were identified. Furthermore, in terms of Chopin alveograph parameters, grain protein content, and gluten quantity and quality, most introgressive lines were not inferior to or surpassed the standard variety Saratovskaya 76. Thus, the identified lines, resistant to both Russian stem rust populations and race Ug99, represent valuable initial material for breeding for immunity to this dangerous disease.

Marker-assisted breeding of new wheat germplasm with adult-plant resistance to stripe rust in the genetic background of Longmai479

In response to the worsening severity of wheat stripe rust in recent years, which poses a serious threat to food security, new wheat germplasm with adult-plant resistance and superior agronomic traits is being developed. We developed five hybrid combinations by crossing Longmai479 with 50212-2, Xikemai11, Chuanmai98, C...

Mapping and Evaluation of Quantitative Trait Loci for Adult-Plant Stripe Rust Resistance in the Sichuan Wheat Cultivar Chuanmai 62

Stripe rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst), poses a persistent threat to wheat production in China. The Sichuan cultivar Chuanmai 62 (CM62) has exhibited stable adult-plant resistance (APR) for over a decade. To elucidate its genetic basis, we evaluated a recombinant inbred line population (CM62 ×...

Screening Central Asian Wheat Germplasm for Powdery Mildew Resistance and Molecular Characterization of Disease Resistance Genes

Powdery mildew, caused by Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici (Bgt), is a widespread and destructive wheat disease. Employing host powdery mildew (Pm) resistance genes is the most cost-effective and environmentally sustainable approach to managing this disease. In this study, we evaluated seedling resistance in 192 wheat...

Agronomic Performance and Dual Resistance Evaluation to Powdery Mildew and Stripe Rust in 660 Wheat Germplasm Lines

Wheat powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici, Bgt) and stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici, Pst) are two foliar diseases that threaten global wheat production. The development of germplasms with resistance to both diseases and acceptable agronomic performance is a priority for improving wheat. A...
