Abstract

Precision horticulture has emerged as an innovative approach for enhancing the productivity, quality, and sustainability of fruit and vegetable production through the efficient use of advanced information and communication technologies. Increasing demand for high-quality horticultural produce, coupled with challenges such as climate change, water scarcity, declining soil fertility, labor shortages, and environmental degradation, has accelerated the adoption of precision-based farming systems. Precision horticulture integrates technologies such as Global Positioning System (GPS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), drones, robotics, wireless sensor networks, computer vision, and decision-support systems to monitor crop growth, soil conditions, pest incidence, nutrient status, and environmental variability in real time. These technologies facilitate site-specific management of irrigation, fertilization, pest control, harvesting, and crop monitoring, thereby improving resource-use efficiency and reducing production costs. Precision horticulture enhances water productivity, nutrient-use efficiency, crop yield, fruit quality, and profitability while minimizing chemical inputs, greenhouse gas emissions, and environmental pollution. Modern technologies also support early disease detection, automated harvesting, digital traceability, and climate-smart farming practices. Despite these advantages, challenges such as high investment costs, limited technical expertise, inadequate digital infrastructure, and small landholdings continue to restrict widespread adoption in many developing countries. This paper examines the principles and technologies of precision horticulture, evaluates its role in sustainable fruit and vegetable production, discusses its contribution to environmental conservation, and explores emerging technologies and future prospects for smart horticultural farming systems.
