Abstract
It is the coursebook that decides what a learner hears in class, how long the recording runs and how fast it is delivered. The article asks what the Cambridge University Press «Prepare» course offers for developing listening in grades 7–8, where that offer runs out, and what can be done about it. The listening component is examined against six parameters, each resting on a specific empirical finding: authenticity of the audio material, topical content, Ta’limda istiqbolli izlanishlar - xalqaro ilmiy-metodik jurnal № 8/2026 ISSN: 3060-527X volume of available practice, task typology, the arrangement of scaffolding, and the presence of a metacognitive component. The course supplies high-quality semi-authentic material, a predictable task system and a well-developed digital infrastructure, yet its examination orientation lets the assessment function crowd out the instructional one. Three lines of methodological supplementation are proposed, none of which requires replacing the course.
