Artificial Intelligence in Emergency Medicine: A Systematic Literature Review
Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) stands as a transformative force, fundamentally reshaping numerous sectors, with medicine and healthcare being at the forefront of this evolution. This study examines current and anticipated AI applications in emergency medicine, highlighting their impact on patient outcomes, healthcare delivery, and emergency department efficiency. This review details the expansive role of artificial intelligence and machine learning in revolutionizing emergency medical practices, both clinically and operationally. Clinically, AI enhances direct patient care through rapid diagnosis, early sepsis detection, advanced imaging analysis, and continuous patient monitoring. Operationally, these technologies streamline emergency department workflows, optimize intelligent triage and resource management, and bolster mass casualty coordination. Additionally, predictive analytics allow healthcare providers to forecast treatment outcomes, anticipate adverse medication reactions, and identify high-risk individuals to enable more proactive, targeted interventions. Despite these promising applications, the study emphasizes that AI in emergency medicine is still evolving and faces notable implementation barriers. While the capacity to refine patient care and boost efficiency is evident, unlocking the technology's full potential requires addressing current obstacles. The review concludes that the path forward hinges on continued research, sustained investment, and ongoing collaboration to successfully integrate these groundbreaking innovations and ultimately improve outcomes for patients in critical need. Through these examples, the study illustrates AI and machine learning's remarkable capacity to refine patient care and enhance the efficiency of emergency medical services. However, it acknowledges the necessity for further research and implementation efforts to tackle current obstacles and unlock the full potential of AI within emergency medicine. The path forward will require ongoing collaboration, investment, and innovation to fully harness these groundbreaking technologies and improve health outcomes for patients in need.
