Environmental Studies and Sustainable Development: Challenges and Prospects

Sep 2026 · International Journal of Advanced Research in Social Sciences, Environmental Studies & Technology · 0 citations

Abstract

Environmental Studies is an interdisciplinary field concerned with the relationship between human societies and the natural environment. It examines major environmental problems such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, deforestation, land degradation, water scarcity, and unsustainable resource consumption. In recent decades, environmental challenges have become increasingly interconnected with economic development, public health, food security, and social inequality. Scientific assessments show that human activities have contributed substantially to global warming and that climate change is already producing widespread impacts on ecosystems and human communities. This paper examines the importance of Environmental Studies in understanding contemporary environmental problems and promoting sustainable development. It reviews major scholarly perspectives on sustainability, climate change, biodiversity conservation, environmental governance, and the relationship between human development and ecological systems. The literature indicates that effective environmental management requires interdisciplinary knowledge, technological innovation, strong institutions, public participation, environmental education, and equitable policies. The paper concludes that environmental protection should not be treated as separate from economic and social development. Instead, environmental considerations should be incorporated into planning and decision-making at local, national, and international levels. The paper recommends stronger environmental education, renewable-energy development, sustainable resource management, improved environmental legislation, biodiversity conservation, and greater participation of communities in environmental decision-making.
