TL;DR

Overall, the sed aDNA record provides an example of a dynamic Early Holocene, followed by a relatively stable flora on a subantarctic island prior to human impact, enriches the authors' knowledge of this unique and isolated archipelago over time and showcases the potential of using sed aDNA to reveal past bryophyte communities.

Abstract

While the Antarctic region has experienced significant climatic changes over the Holocene, few high‐resolution records have examined their effects on the local biota. In order to understand past ecological shifts and forecast future changes, it is important to obtain high‐resolution palaeoecological records from this region. The windy Kerguelen Archipelago in the subantarctic Indian Ocean is covered by relatively sparse vegetation that grows close to the ground. We characterise the local flora on the island of Grande Terre over the past 11 080 years using sedimentary ancient DNA ( sed aDNA) metabarcoding with a general plant primer targeting the P6 loop minibarcode. We identify a shift in vegetation composition at approximately 8700 calibrated years before present (cal a BP), similar to the northward shift of the Southern Hemisphere Westerlies (SHWs) inferred from a previous pollen record, when a dynamic Azorella ‐ and other forb‐dominated Early Holocene flora shifted towards one dominated by Azorella and bryophytes. This suggests a shift from a warmer Early Holocene to a colder Mid‐ to Late‐Holocene. The high representation of bryophytes in the flora was revealed by the local record provided by sed aDNA, which are difficult to detect using traditional proxies, and even more could have been detected with increased DNA reference libraries and using bryophyte‐specific primers. We discuss potential climate drivers based on vegetation changes throughout the core, including the effects that changes in the SHW and glacial dynamics may have had. Overall, our sed aDNA record provides an example of a dynamic Early Holocene, followed by a relatively stable flora on a subantarctic island prior to human impact, enriches our knowledge of this unique and isolated archipelago over time and showcases the potential of using sed aDNA to reveal past bryophyte communities.

Terrestrial paleoenvironments and paleoclimate during the Miocene climate optimum at Buluk, East Turkana, Kenya

Understanding the environmental and climatic context of Neogene fossil localities in eastern Africa is critical for determining potential drivers of evolution in our hominoid ancestors and their floral and faunal communities. In this study, we reconstructed paleoenvironments and paleoclimate conditions for strata assoc...

Late-Holocene and recent changes in small mammal communities of Northern Córdoba (central Argentina): Evidence from archeological records and owl pellets

Small mammals are highly sensitive bioindicators widely used to reconstruct paleoenvironmental conditions. This study analyzes modern and archeological assemblages from Northern Córdoba province (central Argentina) to evaluate changes in community structure from the Holocene to the present. Modern data derive from ra...

The pollen record of Zoko Andi 1 archaeological site: contributions for understanding late Holocene paleoenvironments of the southwestern Pampa and northeastern Patagonia (Argentina)

Paleoenvironmental proxies have enabled the reconstruction of late Holocene paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental conditions in the lower basin of the Colorado River (LBCR), within the eastern Pampa–Patagonia transition (Argentina). However, these reconstructions require refinement and testing through new data. Fossil p...

PALYNOLOGICAL EVIDENCE FOR HOLOCENE PALEOENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES ON THE ATLANTIC COAST OF TIERRA DEL FUEGO (ARGENTINA): THE ARROYO GAMMA RECORD

This study presents a paleoenvironmental reconstruction of the Atlantic coast of Tierra del Fuego based on the analysis of a 170-cm-thick sedimentary sequence exposed along the lower reach of Arroyo Gamma (AG, 53°27′46″ S, 68°05′21.2″ W). During the middle Holocene, this area likely constituted a bay that was subsequen...

Synchronous responses of floodplain ecosystems to Holocene climate oscillations in Western Kamchatka (Russia): A case study from the middle reaches of the Icha River

Multi-proxy palaeoecological reconstruction is a powerful tool for tracing past vegetation and ecosystem dynamics, yet such studies remain rare in Western Kamchatka. We investigated two Holocene sites from the Icha River valley using pollen, diatom, palaeozoological and plant macrofossil analyses, together with loss-on...

Convergence and divergence of Holocene fire regimes and vegetation dynamics on hills and in the Clay Belt of northwestern Quebec

The role of topography in long-term climate–fire–vegetation nexuses remains understudied, particularly in the boreal mixedwood lowlands of eastern Canada due to limited accessibility and scarcity of lake-sediment archives on hills. Yet, reconstructing paleoenvironmental conditions on hills is essential to understand lo...
