Abstract

After its description in 1825, the genus Adesmia increased from 9 to the 207 species currently recognized. Adesmia can be diagnosed by the herbaceous to shrubby habit, pinnate leaves, yellow flowers with free stamen, and the lomentaceous pods. It is the second most diverse genus of angiosperms in Chile, with more than one hundred species recorded to the country. While conducting systematic and taxonomic studies on Adesmia in the context of preparing a synopsis for the genus in Chile, a new species from the Atacama Desert was discovered. Adesmia mirabilis is described based on herbarium specimens and citizen science records and differs from morphologically close related species by the long spinescent inflorescence axis with persistent bracts. We provide illustrations, distribution map, complete description, and comments on distribution, conservation, and etymology.

A new old species of Tetracera (Dilleniaceae) from Espinhaço Range, Brazil

Tetracera is the only genus within Dilleniaceae with a pantropical distribution. During efforts for a taxonomic revision of the neotropical species, we identified incongruences between application of names and their taxonomic identities, based on protologue and type specimen analysis. Here we describe a new species for the genus bearing a single carpel and briefly discuss the group of species that develops a single carpel. Tetracera lanosa M.Araújo & Fraga is a striking new species distributed in semideciduous forests from 500 to 1000 m elevation in Bahia and Minas Gerais states. It can be easily distinguished by the leaves with abaxial surface with sessile stellate trichomes, entangled and soft and carpel entirely covered by indumentum, which separates it from all other species bearing a single carpel. A comparison with putative allies as well as an identification key, photographic plates, geographic distribution, and preliminary conservation status are given.

Acantholimon joharchii, a new species of Acantholimon sect. Acantholimon (Plumbaginaceae) from Iran

Acantholimon joharchii, a new species from northeastern Iran, is described and illustrated. The species belongs to Acantholimon sect. Acantholimon and is characterized by monomorphic, persistent leaves and one-flowered spikelets. It is morphologically most similar to A. gillii but differs in having oblong-obovate bracteoles that are distinctly shorter than the calyx tube, a longer calyx tube (6–6.5 mm), and calyx veins reaching the margin of the limb. A. joharchii occurs in mountainous habitats, on shallow, gravelly, and rocky soils. The species appears to have a very narrow distribution and may require conservation attention. Diagnostic characters, morphology, and habitat of the new species are discussed, highlighting its distinctiveness from related taxa.

A new species of Pentagonia (Rubiaceae, Dialypetalantheae) from Santander, Colombia, with an identification key to the Colombian species

Pentagonia santanderensis (Rubiaceae, Dialypetalantheae) is described and illustrated from the department of Santander, occurring in the municipalities of Cimitarra, La Belleza, and Landázuri in fragmented forests and primary forest edges associated with water sources. We compare this new taxon with morphologically similar species; the size of its leaves, the magenta coloration of the strongly pleated leaf bases, and the color, indumentum, and size of the corolla, as well as the fruits, are diagnostic characters. This new species increases the number of Pentagonia species recorded in Colombia to 23. Based on the IUCN criteria, P. santanderensis is assessed as Endangered (EN B2a(ii)b(iii)) due to its restricted distribution and continuing decline in habitat quality.

Macrotomia bosbutooensis (Boraginaceae), a new species from Kyrgyzstan

The paper provides a description of a new species of Macrotomia from section Munbuya from Kyrgyzstan (Western Tian Shan). Genus Macrotomia is a small group of species of the Boraginaceae family distributed from the Himalayas to Asia Minor and southern Europe (Greece). The exact number of species in the genus is unknown, due to the fact that a number of names are critical, and this taxon itself is often considered part of the genus Arnebia. The new species is close to Macrotomia euchromos, the most widespread species in Middle Asia, but differs from it in corolla color, as well as in its distribution in a lower mountain zone, an earlier flowering and fruiting time. According to our data, the new species is endemic to the Bosbu-Too Mountains (Western Tian Shan) but can be found on the adjacent Atoynok Mt. Ridge.

Polygonum halophilum (Polygonaceae): a new species from semi salty plain of Erzurum, Eastern Anatolia (Türkiye)

Polygonum halophilum is described as a species new to science from Erzurum Province (Eastern Anatolia, Türkiye). It is morphologically similar to P. acerosum and P. cappadocicum, but differs in having densely fibrous roots, elliptic or lanceolate leaf, 2−3-nerved ocreae, and 6 stamens. In addition, the habitat of the newly described species, which is semi-saline and ranges from damp to drying swamp, is distinctly different from that of the closely related taxa. While nuclear ribosomal DNA Internal Transcribed Spacer data support the new described taxa at specific level, they provide insufficient resolution for its sectional classification. This paper also provides an updated key to the relative species in Türkiye, photographic illustrations, and fruit (nut) anatomy, nut and leaf micromorphology and palynological features of the new species together with a discussion of conservation issues.

A taxonomic revision of Thaumatocaryon (Boraginaceae) reveals hidden diversity in southern South America

Thaumatocaryon is a small genus of South American Boraginaceae with only three accepted names. This genus, along with Moritzia, comprises a monophyletic lineage called Moritziinae. During a review of herbarium specimens, we found morphological divergences that led us to conclude that Thaumatocaryon is more complex than previously known. According to the morphologic analysis, we recognize nine species, resulting from the revalidation of T. hilarii and the description of five new species. The species are differentiated by characteristics such as phyllotaxy, indumentum, as well as the length and color of the corolla, the morphology of stems and basal leaves, and the arrangement of flowering stems. We present a detailed description of each species, updating the four previously described species, field photographs (when available), exsiccate plates, distribution maps, and a key for all species of the genus.
