An Algorithm for Placing Inventory in a Warehouse Based on Order Statistics and Warehouse Management System Data
Abstract
The purpose of the study is to develop an algorithm for inventory placement in a warehouse based on order statistics and warehouse management system data, with due consideration of product demand, joint picking patterns, load characteristics, and storage conditions. The research materials comprise scholarly publications on location assignment, order picking, demand variability, scattered storage, and warehouse management, as well as warehouse management system data on orders, inventory balances, storage locations, tasks, and warehouse zone utilization. The study employs structural and comparative analysis, factor classification, statistical calculations, deductive modelling, and methodological design. Result: an original algorithm integrating data preparation, calculation of product-item characteristics, assessment of the current storage location, selection of the storage zone, recording of the decision in the warehouse management system, and evaluation of the resulting effect. Conclusions: a) the storage location is determined by a combination of statistical indicators and warehouse constraints; b) joint picking patterns are considered alongside product demand; c) the proposed algorithm contributes to shorter travel routes, reduced order-picking time, fewer repeated visits to storage locations, and lower congestion in warehouse zones.
