Abstract

We investigate metric dimension and the localization game for several families of directed analogues of strongly regular graphs and their generalizations, adapting a probabilistic method of Babai (1980) for bounding the size of resolving sets in undirected strongly regular graphs. We derive upper bounds on the localization number and metric dimension depending on the order of the graph and the maximum number of common out-neighbours for a pair of vertices. We consider normally regular digraphs, so-called"ordinary graphs", classes of Deza digraphs, divisible design digraphs, nearly doubly regular tournaments, and certain doubly regular team tournaments. In particular, for asymmetric normally regular digraphs on $n$ vertices, we show that these invariants are bounded above by $O(\sqrt{n} \log n)$, and improve this to $O(\log n)$ for a class of doubly regular team tournaments.

Default-Distance Entropy and Metric Dimension in Finite Geometries

A resolving set in a graph is a set of landmarks whose distance vectors distinguish all vertices. We use information theory to prove lower bounds for metric dimension and class dimension in distance-regular graphs and association schemes arising from finite geometry. The core idea is that, for a fixed landmark, a random object usually lies in one overwhelmingly likely distance or relation class. For classical dual polar graphs, with rank and type fixed and $q\to\infty$ through the admissible field orders, we prove $\mu(\Gamma(q,d,e))=\Theta_{d,e}(q^e)$ for $d\geq 2$ and $e>0$. The lower bound uses opposition as the typical distance. For the upper bound, we take, for each of a constant number of $(d-1)$-dimensional singular subspaces, all generators containing it. For Grassmann graphs, bilinear forms graphs, and attenuated-space schemes, we obtain lower bounds of the same exponential order as the known incidence constructions.

Unified framework for asymptotically uniform iterative construction of generalised random graphs with local constraints

The main theorem gives the asymptotic sampling distribution and enumeration formulae for configurations, and accommodates forbidden edges, and enables the sampling of edge-colored graphs with prescribed degree sequences for each color class by constructing the colored subgraphs one at a time.

Time-Optimal APSP and Matrix Multiplication in Classes of Linear Neighborhood Complexity

This work presents $O(n^2)$-time optimal algorithms for $n$-vertex graphs coming from a class of linear neighborhood complexity for the following problems: All-Pairs Shortest Paths, and the multiplication of the adjacency matrix of the input graph with any $n \times n$ matrix.

Hitting Maximum Independent Sets in Dense and Highly Connected Graphs

For a graph $G$, let $h(G)$ be the minimum cardinality of a vertex set meeting every maximum independent set of $G$. We establish two complementary reduction principles for the Bollob\'as--Erd\H{o}s--Tuza conjecture: the conjecture for arbitrary graphs is equivalent to its restriction to regular graphs of any fixed positive linear degree, and, within every hereditary graph class, a uniform sublinear bound is equivalent to a sublinear bound on graphs of every fixed positive linear vertex connectivity. We prove the sharp general estimate \[ h(G)\le \left\lfloor\frac{|V(G)|}{2\alpha(G)+\delta(G)-|V(G)|}\right\rfloor \] whenever the denominator is positive, with equality for balanced complete multipartite graphs. Consequently, every $3$-colorable graph of order $n$ with $\kappa(G)\ge\rho n$ and $\rho>1/3$ has a hitting set of size at most $\lfloor(\rho-1/3)^{-1}\rfloor$; direct use of a $3$-coloring improves this to $6$ when $\kappa(G)>4n/9$ and to the sharp bound $3$ when $\kappa(G)>n/2$. For dense regular graphs with independence ratio greater than $1/4$, we obtain a logarithmic bound, while constructions with linear degree and linear independence number show that $h(G)=\Omega(\sqrt n)$ can still occur. We also prove a logarithmic bound for near-regular $3$-colorable graphs and exhibit a critical family at connectivity $n/3$ that explains the limitations of the degree-surplus and degree-ratio methods.

A note on three-quarters circulant digraphs

We introduce and study a new family of circulant digraphs associated with the cyclic group \({\mathbb Z}_N\), obtained by restricting admissible combinations of two generators \(a\) and \(b\) to three coordinate sectors. The resulting distance-like function differs from the standard directed distance in circulant digraphs and gives rise to new geometric and combinatorial phenomena. Using planar lattice representations and periodic tessellations, we analyze the growth of reachable sets and derive Moore-type upper bounds for the corresponding order/diameter problem. We construct explicit infinite families of three-quarters circulant structures with the prescribed diameter and provide lattice-based methods for determining admissible generator pairs. Separate constructions are obtained for even and odd diameters. In addition, computational experiments for small and moderate orders suggest improved families for even diameters and motivate a conjectural asymptotic formula for the maximum attainable order. The paper highlights the interplay between constrained lattice representations, periodic tilings, and extremal problems for circulant networks.

Bipartite Extremal Numbers of Trees

We study a restriction of the classical Erd\H{o}s--S\'os problem, the extremal number of trees, to the class of bipartite host graphs, both when only the order of the host is prescribed and when its two part-sizes are fixed. We give natural lower-bound constructions and formulate corresponding linear upper-bound conjectures. We apply a weighted variant of $k$-minimality to prove upper bounds for a broad family of trees including brooms, trees with part-sizes obeying certain inequalities, and all trees on at most seven vertices, resolving part of a problem of Caro, Patk\'os and Tuza up to additive constants. We also relate the fixed-part extremal number of a tree to the ordinary extremal number, and consider an oriented bipartite extremal function analogous to the Zarankiewicz function.
