Community-based Tourism Development and Sustainability

Abstract

Digital transformation has driven changes in tourism village promotion strategies through the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI), digital storytelling, and community empowerment. However, previous research has examined these three concepts separately, thus not yet producing an integrated context model. This study aims to formulate a conceptual model integrating generative AI, digital storytelling, and community empowerment as a framework for community empowerment to strengthen the promotion of innovative, competitive, and sustainable tourism villages. The study used a qualitative approach with a literature review method of peer-reviewed articles from the 2020–2026 period obtained from Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, Taylor & Francis Online, Emerald Insight, and Google Scholar. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis and conceptual framework development. The results show that Generative AI plays a role as an Enabler Technology in producing creative promotional content, Digital Storytelling strengthens Destination Branding through authentic narratives, while Community Empowerment increases community capacity to manage digital technology. The formulated model concept is supported by AI literacy, digital literacy, rapid engineering capabilities, community creativity, local leadership, digital infrastructure, stakeholder collaboration, and policy support. This model contributes as a theoretical and practical basis for the development of participatory and sustainable technology-based tourism village promotion.
