Abstract

Coastal sandy soil remains constrained by its low capacity to retain water and essential nutrients, particularly nitrogen, which is highly susceptible to leaching. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of rice husk biochar and humic acid application on soil chemical properties and their relationship with soybean growth. The experiment was conducted at the Research Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional "Veteran" Yogyakarta, using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with a two-factor factorial arrangement and three replications, resulting in 48 experimental units. The first factor was rice husk biochar (B) at four dosage levels, and the second factor was humic acid (H) at four dosage levels. The results showed that rice husk biochar and humic acid application improved soil organic C, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and total nitrogen, which was followed by better soybean growth. The highest values were observed under the B3H3 treatment (20 ton ha-1 biochar and 3,15 L ha-1 humic acid). This combination increased soil organic C from 0.51% to 1.11%, CEC from 1.1 cmol(+) kg⁻¹ to 1.72 cmol(+) kg⁻¹, and total nitrogen from 0.21% to 0.44%. The improved soil chemical fertility was accompanied by better soybean performance, with a plant height of 88.72 cm, 27 leaves, and 23.67 pods per plant. Overall, applying rice husk biochar and humic acid improved soil chemical properties, particularly organic C, CEC, and total nitrogen, thereby supporting soybean growth.

Soil Hydraulic and Structural Responses to Biochar Amendment Under Deficit Irrigation in a Lowland Rice System

This study evaluated the effects of biochar amendment on the physical and chemical properties of an acidic sandy‐loam hydromorphic soil (humic Gleysol) under lowland rice cultivation in the Koussin‐Lélé area of Benin. A split‐plot experiment combined two irrigation regimes, continuous flooding (CF) and alternate we...

Biochar and poultry manure impacts on soil characteristics and yam productivity in a degraded tropical Alfisol

Background and Objective: Soil degradation remains a significant constraint to sustainable production of white yam (Dioscorea rotundata Poir) in tropical regions, largely due to continuous cultivation and progressive nutrient depletion. While organic amendments like biochar and poultry manure have been studied in cerea...

The impact of compound soil conditioner on the physicochemical properties of acidic farmland soil in Sichuan Province, China

Soil acidification is a critical factor leading to low soil fertility and continuous nutrient loss, severely affecting ag - ricultural production. In this study, a typical acidic soil area in Sichuan, China, was selected as the research region. Based on a systematic analysis of the physicochemical properties of the aci...

Medium term assessment of soil properties in a biochar amended Kentucky silty loam soil

Interest in biochar as a sustainable amendment is increasing, yet its medium-term effects on soil properties in fertile agricultural soils remain under-researched. Therefore, this study evaluated the effect of biochar treatment, soybean maturity group, and soil depth on selected physical and chemical properties of Kent...

Effect of biochar and mineral fertilizer integration on growth and nutrient dynamics of rice varieties under dry direct-seeded conditions

Introduction The increasing need for food, which results from fast population growth, requires agricultural methods that can produce more crops while protecting soil health. Biochar has become an effective soil enhancer that boosts soil fertility and nutrient retention while increasing crop productivity. Methods The st...

Impacts of humic acid on soil microbial diversity and productivity in tea cultivation toward sustainable agriculture

Tea is an important perennial plantation crop whose prolonged monoculture practice and continuous usage of inorganic fertilizers often result in soil degradation, depletion of organic matter, and reduced nutrient use efficiency (NUE). In this context, this study evaluated the application of humic acid, a sustainable so...
