Abstract
The article explores the prospects of integrating Research-Based Learning (RBL) into the environment of Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) to enhance students' academic and intercultural competencies. The implementation of COIL in the “English for Professional Purposes” course at the Faculty of Information Technologies, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, introduced an innovative format of international academic collaboration, where students act not only as participants but also as leaders, moderators, and trainers of research projects. This approach transforms the traditional learning model by shifting the focus from individual knowledge acquisition to team-based collaboration, creative co-creation, and the development of professional responsibility. COIL modules developed by master's students combine elements of design thinking, intercultural communication, and experiential practices, fostering a new ethic of academic interaction based on creativity, empathy, and global openness. The study employed methods of structural-functional analysis, modeling, and systematization, and drew on empirical data from a pilot international project involving students from four universities. The results demonstrated that integrating RBL into COIL promotes students' autonomy, active engagement in producing research outputs, and the development of intercultural competence through authentic communicative tasks in cross-cultural teams. At the same time, the study highlighted the need for targeted pedagogical support to deepen practical intercultural knowledge and enhance non-verbal adaptation skills, thereby improving students' readiness to operate effectively in multicultural academic environments.
