Abstract

To enhance the seismic performance of steel-reinforced rubber bearing beam bridges, this paper proposes a quasi-isolation system to address two critical limitations: inadequate displacement-limiting capacity and compromised self-centring capacity. In the OpenSees software platform, a refined finite-element model of a four-span continuous beam bridge was established. Based on seismic responses such as girder beam displacement and pier internal forces in bridge piers, this paper analyses the mechanical parameters of mild steel blocks and viscous dampers. The results indicate that when the mild steel blocks are designed with a yield strength equivalent to 20% of the bearing reaction force, an initial stiffness corresponding to a yield displacement of 0.01 m and a post-yield stiffness ratio of 0.08, they can effectively control the lateral displacement of the main girder, substantially reduce post-earthquake residual displacement and reduce the force and displacement demands on the bearings. For viscous dampers with a damping exponent α of 0.4, they can, to a certain extent, reduce the maximum and residual displacements at the girder ends while significantly decreasing the internal forces in the piers. For the investigated bridge, the proposed arrangement improves displacement control and reduces the seismic force demand on the piers under the adopted analysis conditions.

Experimental Investigation and Restoring Force Model of Steel Archaizing Building Joints with Viscous Dampers

To enhance the seismic performance of steel archaizing buildings without altering their traditional architectural appearance, viscous dampers were installed in the Que-ti bracket regions of beam–column joints. Seismic Performance of Steel Frames with Replaceable Energy-Dissipating Slit Joints: Experimental and FE Analyses

Steel moment-resisting frames are widely used in seismic regions, but conventional beam–column connections often suffer from concentrated damage and difficult post-earthquake repair. To address these issues, this study proposes a novel replaceable energy-dissipating slit beam–column joint for steel frames. To enhance s...

Comparative Nonlinear Seismic Response of Fixed-Base and Lead-Rubber-Isolated Reinforced Concrete Building Systems

This study examines how lead-rubber bearing (LRB) isolation changes the seismic response of a ten-story reinforced-concrete building using matched fixed-base and isolated models. Three-dimensional ETABS models were analyzed using nonlinear direct integration under the EQ-X component of the 1999 Kocaeli earthquake recor...

Influence of anti-seismic strengthening schemes on the load-bearing capacity and lateral stiffness of reinforced concrete frames of multi-story buildings

The object of research is a reinforced concrete frame of a multi-story building strengthened by various anti-seismic methods. The problem solved is the lack of comparative experimental data on how different strengthening techniques affect the load-bearing capacity and rigidity of such frames under lateral loading. Fram...

Seismic timber concentric braced frames with steel link: design and analysis

The seismic performance of dissipative timber structures is strongly influenced by the elastic‐fragile behavior of the material and the dissipation capacity is generally concentrated in steel connections, as indicated in the current seismic standards for timber structures. However, the connections should be preserved t...
