A 3D Geological Framework for Conceptual Hydrogeological Modelling of a Structurally Complex Aquifer System: Insights from the SE Tagus–Sado Basin, Iberian Pyrite Belt, Portugal

Abstract

Groundwater is a critical resource for ecological sustainability and socio-economic development, but it is increasingly threatened by climate change and anthropogenic pressures. In southern Europe, particularly in Portugal, declining groundwater availability has become a major concern in recent years. This study focuses on the southeastern sector of the Tagus–Sado Basin Left Bank Aquifer System (TSLBA), a major regional aquifer system exhibiting signs of increasing water stress. This study develops a three-dimensional geological model to improve understanding of the aquifer’s hydrogeological behaviour. The model integrates regional geological mapping, data from 90 mineral exploration boreholes (up to ~800 m deep), and geophysical surveys, including gravity, magnetometry, and resistivity data. These datasets were used to reconstruct the Cenozoic Basin and the underlying Palaeozoic basement structures. The detailed 3D model provides insights into the spatial configuration of Cenozoic and Palaeozoic formations and Alpine and Variscan fault zones. The model successfully captures the groundwater flow dynamics of the aquifer system and its relationships with the adjacent ones. The results indicate that groundwater flow within the aquifer system is influenced by surface hydrology in the shallow units and by structural geological features at depth, leading to compartmentalised flow regimes and complex hydraulic interactions between aquifers.

Integrated geophysical and hydrogeochemical characterization of a fractured limestone aquifer in new Tuna El Gabel village, West El-Minia, Egypt

Groundwater is a vital component of water supply in arid regions, such as West El-Minia Governorate, Egypt, where water scarcity is projected to worsen, with per capita water supply expected to drop below 500 m3 by 2025. In response, Egypt’s One and a Half Million Feddan (≈630,000 hectares) project aims to reclaim the...

REVEALING THE SUBSURFACE: AN INTEGRATED GEOPHYSICAL AND GEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION OF HYDROGEOLOGICAL SYSTEMS, GEOLOGICAL FORMATIONS, AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROCESSES FOR ENHANCED RESOURCE CHARACTERIZATION AND MANAGEMENT

The Bojude–Gadam area of Kwami Local Government Area, Gombe State, northeastern Nigeria, was investigated to characterize the subsurface and assess groundwater potential using geological mapping and ten vertical electrical soundings (VES) acquired with a Schlumberger array. The VES data were interpreted by one-dimensio...

Hydrogeological conceptual model for the Guarani Aquifer System outcrop area in Brazil: Insights from stable isotopes and rare earth elements

This study refines the hydrogeological conceptual model of the Guarani Aquifer System (GAS) outcrop area in São Paulo state in Brazil and highlights its complexity, particularly the coexistence of semi-confined and unconfined aquifers. Diabase sills act as aquitards, separating a Na⁺-HCO₃⁻ type deep groundwater fro...

Groundwater budgeting of the fractured sedimentary aquifer of the Abakaliki Region (southern Benue Trough, Nigeria) using Modflow-Owhm and Gis

Groundwater in the fractured sedimentary rocks of the Abakaliki region, southeastern Nigeria, is the principal source of potable water but is increasingly threatened by population growth, climate variability, and rising groundwater abstraction. This study develops what is, to our knowledge, the first three-dimensional...
