Abstract.
We introduce a preconditioner for a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin discretization of the linearized Navier–Stokes equations at high Reynolds number. The preconditioner is based on an augmented Lagrangian (AL) approach of the full discretization. Unlike standard grad-div type augmentation, however, we consider augmentation based on divergence-conformity. We introduce a new algebraic analysis of AL-type preconditioning in the context of singular perturbations. With this augmentation we introduce two different, well-conditioned, and easy to solve matrices to approximate the trace pressure Schur complement. Numerical examples demonstrate that these approximations to the trace pressure Schur complement are highly robust in mesh spacing and Reynolds number.

We present a parameter-robust preconditioner for a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) discretization of a four-field formulation of Biot’s consolidation model. We first determine a parameter-robust preconditioner for the full discretization. HDG methods, however, allow for static condensation. We therefore apply...

The proximal Galerkin algorithm is a structure-preserving solver for variational inequalities that results in discretization-independent nonlinear iteration counts. However, in large three-dimensional simulations, the arising Newton saddle point systems cannot be feasibly solved by direct methods. To leverage an iterat...

When computing high-order solutions of compressible multicomponent flows, numerical instabilities at shock waves and material interfaces must be mitigated without compromising accuracy. A widely adopted strategy is the use of a posteriori limiters to enforce physical admissibility at the cell level. In this work, we co...

This work studies adaptive sparse-grid discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretizations for the Bhatnagar--Gross--Krook (BGK) model, a kinetic equation posed in four- and six-dimensional phase-space. Standard DG methods are rendered impractical for the BGK model by the curse of dimensionality, motivating compressed represen...

We propose a mixed finite element discretisation for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations that preserves the evolution laws of both energy and enstrophy, in a stronger sense than previous discretisations. In two dimensions, the evolution law for enstrophy only permits dissipation for thermodynamically isolated sy...
