In-context learning (ICL) can induce emergent misalignment (EM), where narrow misaligned examples alter answers to unrelated questions. Existing prompts, however, conflate harmful-text exposure with an invitation to continue assistant behavior. We hold harmful answers fixed while varying their delivery as demonstrations, evidence, assistant history, or tool output. Across ten independently sampled contexts, demonstration framing raises broad EM by $30$--$32$ percentage points on a susceptible Gemini model; the gap survives domain exclusion, semantic clustering, unseen questions, and four prompt templates. Format and length-matched controls show that harmful content is necessary but insufficient. A role times continuation factorial further reveals model-dependent provenance effects: Gemini follows both assistant and tool histories, whereas Grok largely resists tool-framed continuation. Several other frontier and open-weight models show no gap. Blinded human audits confirm every main contrast and show that the model judge underestimates active-condition failures. Thus continuation framing is a strong, model-dependent moderator of ICL-EM, not a universal consequence of harmful context.
Flip rates are insufficient as a complete measure of open-ended conformity, wrong peers harm open-ended revision, evaluators are not neutral, and anchor calibration is necessary.
Multi-turn jailbreak attacks demonstrate that harmful intent can be distributed across dialogue, yet existing methods obscure what conversational mechanisms drive vulnerability. We introduce BLUEPRINT, a safety-evaluation framework separating a factorized social-influence strategy space from WORLDVIEWSIM, a cross-turn situational context module. Monte Carlo Tree Search optimizes turn-level combinations of 18 theory-grounded influence factors across a four-turn trajectory. Across six frontier models, BLUEPRINT achieves near-ceiling ASR on major open-weight and proprietary models, while requiring the fewest average queries (2.46). The resulting trajectories further reveal model-specific vulnerability among resistant targets: each responds to distinct influence factors and strategy transitions, yet all share a common recovery pathway-shifting toward concrete, executable task framing consistently escapes hard-refusal states. Ablations confirm operational cues matter most: making requests actionable has the largest impact, gain framing is unusually potent, and some legitimacy appeals can backfire. These findings suggest robust multi-turn safety requires monitoring not only harmful content, but also how dialogue state makes unsafe requests appear concrete and locally executable.

This work presents the most comprehensive evaluation of LLM safety capabilities to date, systematically testing models across datasets that are organized into four distinct categories, and uncovers critical blind spots.
Persistent memory can personalize an LLM agent, but an incorrect durable update can silently distort future behavior. We study the memory-clarification boundary: whether interaction-derived information should be persisted, used only in the current context, re-verified, or clarified with the user. MCB contains 140 primary scenarios, split into 70 development and 70 held-out items, plus a separate 70-item contrast set. It evaluates both action labels and structured tool-call selection. Two non-authors independently label the 70 held-out primary and 70 contrast items (97.1% agreement, Cohen's kappa = 0.962); a blind third resolves four disagreements, replacing eight author labels by non-author majority. Across Claude and Qwen, models verify changing facts more reliably than they ask users to resolve ambiguity. Bare Qwen asks on 0/12 clarification items while verifying 12/18 freshness items. Few-shot prompting raises accuracy from 0.557 to 0.771 (paired delta = +0.214, Holm-adjusted exact McNemar p_H = 0.002), yet clarification recall remains 0.333. The policy prompt reduces erroneous persistence from 0.243 to 0.100 (p_H = 0.038), although its accuracy gain is not significant. Label-tool agreement is 57% for each Claude model and 23% for Qwen; Qwen accuracy falls from 0.557 to 0.343 (p_H = 0.047). Memory evaluation must test both stated decisions and tool-call choices.
Safety alignment is usually posed as a topic-level question: is this subject harmful? Deployments ask a narrower one. A civics tutor and a public-sector assistant may share a base model yet need different boundaries inside the same topic, refusing targeted political manipulation while still answering factual questions about the same election. We formulate this as narrow-boundary safety and introduce an offline self-generated framework combining controlled topic generation, coverage repair, in-distribution compensation data, and harmful-benign pairs for training and evaluation. Single-shot generation leaves 19.88% of prompts without accepted refusal traces, whereas escalating retries leave 0.20%. On political persuasion with Qwen3-8B, training on refusal data completed through Escalate increases target-domain refusal from 9.47% to 84.75% and reduces the mean unsafe-response rate across three broader harmfulness benchmarks from 26.26% to 0.14%, but increases XSTest over-refusal from 2.00% to 74.00%. In a separate matched comparison, replacing external responses with verified target-model responses reduces over-refusal from 15.20% to 5.20%. Boundary-pair data reduces comply-side over-refusal on held-out pairs from 32.94% to 4.16%, while harmful-side refusal decreases only from 91.88% to 87.72%. These results show that data composition controls the safety and usability trade-off, and that safety alignment should be evaluated on both sides of the intended refusal boundary.

Large language models operating in emotionally sensitive contexts face a structural trilemma: when users in vulnerable states request information that may reinforce maladaptive attribution, current response architectures resolve the tension through protective restriction, uninflected facilitation, or unintegrated co-presence of both imperatives -- each preserving one objective at the cost of the other. Administering a three-turn escalating vulnerability vignette to three commercial LLMs (900 sessions across material, relational, and somatic status-proxy variants) and coding responses with two binary indices (VCC/VCI), we characterize a previously undocumented failure mode we term adaptive capitulation: the model validates the social injustice underlying the user's distress before pivoting to detailed facilitation of the very acquisition it nominally discouraged. We show that the trilemma is structural rather than incidental, and propose Minimal Reattributive Sufficiency (MRS), an architecture-neutral design principle that embeds a single reattributive cue within an otherwise validating response, preserving a pathway toward autonomous reattribution without contesting the user's stated goal.
