Fix a squarefree integer $d_0>1$, and let $d$ range over the positive squarefree integers coprime to $2d_0$. Although $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d_0d})$ share all variable ramified primes, we prove that their class-group $4$-ranks are asymptotically independent. Over the subfamily $d\le X$, their joint distribution converges in total variation to the product of two copies of the Cohen--Lenstra--Gerth distribution, with error bounded by a negative power of $\log\log X$. We further conjecture that the corrected $2$-primary groups $2\operatorname{Cl}_{\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})}[2^\infty]$ and $2\operatorname{Cl}_{\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d_0d})}[2^\infty]$ are asymptotically independent, each with the Cohen--Lenstra distribution. Suppose in addition that the class number of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d_0})$ is odd. For a density-one subset of this family, we prove that extension of ideals to $K(d)=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d_0},\sqrt{-d})$ induces $4\operatorname{Cl}_{K(d)}[2^\infty]\cong 2\operatorname{Cl}_{\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})}[2^\infty]\oplus 2\operatorname{Cl}_{\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d_0d})}[2^\infty]$. Together with this decomposition, the group-valued conjecture predicts that $4\operatorname{Cl}_{K(d)}[2^\infty]$ is distributed as the direct sum of two independent Cohen--Lenstra $2$-groups, giving a corrected Cohen--Lenstra--Martinet distribution for the biquadratic family. Unconditionally, the $8$-rank of $\operatorname{Cl}_{K(d)}$ has limiting distribution given by the convolution of two copies of the Cohen--Lenstra--Gerth distribution. The proof combines Smith's box method with quantitative truncated Gaussian-binomial moment inversion for diagonally coupled, fixed-width bordered R\'edei matrices.
Let $K$ be a number field with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$, and let $A,B,C \in \mathcal{O}_K \setminus\{0\}$. Denote by $S_K'$ the set of prime ideals of $\mathcal{O}_K$ dividing $2ABC$. Assuming two standard conjectures concerning the modularity of mod-$p$ Galois representations and the Eichler-Shimura correspondence over number fields, we study the asymptotic behavior of the generalized Fermat equation $Ax^p+By^p+Cz^p=0$ over $K$. Using the modular method, we establish an asymptotic criterion in terms of the solutions of the associated $S_K'$-unit equation. As an application, we obtain asymptotic results for certain imaginary quadratic fields $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$. In particular, for a family of squarefree integers $d$, we determine the relevant $S_K'$-unit solutions explicitly and deduce that the generalized Fermat equation has no asymptotic solutions. Finally, we show that this family of squarefree integers has relative density $5/6$ among all squarefree positive integers.
Let $q$ be an odd prime power, and let $A_n=(a_{ij})\in\mathbb F_q^{n\times n}$ be a random matrix whose entries are independent and uniformly distributed on $\mathbb F_q$. The permanent of $A_n$ is defined by $\operatorname{per}(A_n)=\sum_{\sigma\in S_n}\prod_{i=1}^n a_{i,\sigma(i)}$, where $S_n$ denotes the symmetric group on $[n]$. Ghasemi, Gross, and Kopparty conjectured the zero-mass asymptotic $\Pr[\operatorname{per}(A_n)=0]=1/q+o(1)$ for every fixed odd prime power $q$, and Hunter, Kwan, and Sauermann subsequently stated its equivalent full-distribution formulation: for every fixed $q$ and every $x\in\mathbb F_q$, \[ \lim_{n\to\infty}\Pr[\operatorname{per}(A_n)=x]=\frac1q. \] In this paper, we prove this conjecture. More precisely, we prove that there is an absolute constant $C>0$ such that \[\frac12\sum_{x\in\mathbb F_q}\left|\Pr[\operatorname{per}(A_n)=x]-\frac1q\right|\le C\frac{\log n}{n}\] for every odd prime power $q$ and every $n\ge 7$. The estimate is uniform in $q$, so the conclusion remains valid for every sequence $q=q(n)$ of odd prime powers.
The factorizations over $\mathbb{F}_p$ of two supersingular polynomials $h_p(x)$ and $g_p(x)$ for genus $2$ curves, discussed by Ibukiyama, Katsura and Oort in their 1986 paper, are investigated. These polynomials are congruent modulo $p$ to the Jacobi polynomials $P_n^{(\alpha,0)}(1-2x)$, for $\alpha = \pm 1/4, \pm 1/6$, respectively. The number of their linear factors (mod $p$) is determined in terms of class numbers of the imaginary quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-dp})$, where $d \in \{1,2,3\}$. The proofs use a quadratic transformation relating these polynomials to the Legendre polynomials $P_n(x)$; previous results on linear and binomial quadratic factors of $P_{(p-e)/4}(x)$ and $P_{(p-\bar e)/3}(x)$ proved by Brillhart and Morton; and properties of the irreducible quadratic factors of the class equations $H_{-3p}(X)$ and $H_{-12p}(X)$ (mod $p$). The quadratic transformation and linear factor results for $h_p(x) \equiv P_n^{(\pm1/4,0)}(1-2x)$ were first discovered using artificial intelligence.
Let $f(t)\in\mathbb{Z}[t]$ be a nonconstant polynomial with nonzero discriminant and let $k\ge2$ be an integer. Inspired by the work of Alon and Bourgain, for sufficiently large prime $p\equiv1\pmod{k}$, we study cyclic orderings of subsets $A\subseteq \mathbb{F}_p$ for which $ f(a_i+a_{i+1})$ is a nonzero $k$-th power for every consecutive pair. By combining mixed character-sum estimates, Fourier analysis on $\mathbb{F}_p$, and spectral graph methods, we establish a threshold $c(p,k,f)$ such that every subset $A$ with $\#A\ge c(p,k,f)$ admits such a cyclic ordering. We also give lower and upper bounds for the optimal threshold.
Jungin Lee in 2018 proved a necessary and sufficient condition that an integral quadratic form $\sum_{i=1}^{m} a_iX_i^2$ is universal over $M_2(\mathbb{Z})$. For a positive integer $n \geq 2$, Lee defined $f(n)$ to be the smallest positive integer $m$ such that for every pairwise coprime $a_1, a_2, \ldots a_m \in \mathbb{Z}$, $\sum_{i=1}^{m}a_iX_i^2$ is universal over $M_n(\mathbb{Z})$. He gave bounds on $f(n)$ too. Koo and Lee further improved the bounds in 2025. This paper is organized as follows. Let $\mathbb{Z}_p$ be the ring of $p$-adic integers. In the first section we give necessary and sufficient condition for a quadratic form $\sum_{i=1}^{m}a_iX_i^2$ to be universal over $M_2(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ for $p=2$ and for an odd prime $p$. Consequently we express matrices of over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ as sum of squares. For a positive integer $n \geq 3$, we define $f(n)$ to be the smallest positive integer $m$ such that for every $p$-adic integers $a_1,a_2, \ldots a_m$ with at least three of them units, the diagonal quadratic form $\sum_{i=1}^{m}a_iX_i^2$ is universal over $M_n(\mathbb{Z}_p)$. In the next section we find bounds on $f(n)$ for $n \geq 3$.
Let $X_{G_h}(\mathbf{x};q)=\sum_{\mu\vdash n}c_\mu(q)e_\mu(\mathbf{x})$ be the chromatic quasisymmetric function of the natural unit interval graph attached to a Hessenberg function $h$. We establish an infinite class, valid in all orders, for which every nonzero polynomial $c_\mu(q)$ has a nonnegative, log-concave coefficient sequence with interval support. Namely, this holds whenever $h$ is abelian and its complement-Ferrers partition $\lambda$ satisfies $\min\{\lambda_1,\ell(\lambda)\}\leq 3$; equivalently, the diagram has at most three rows or at most three columns. Cubic interpolation reduces the rank-three case to a uniform theorem for a difference of two products of four $q$-integers, proved by positive decomposition, interval methods, and finite-window smoothing. The argument also yields explicit formulas for every supported elementary coefficient in complement-Ferrers rank at most three. We also include a connected 13-vertex natural unit interval graph for which one elementary coefficient is positive, palindromic, and unimodal but not log-concave, thereby recording the failure of the unrestricted conjecture. Thus low complement-Ferrers rank gives a substantial positive regime even though coefficientwise $e$-log-concavity fails in general.
