Toward a Gricean Retreat: Probing LLMs for Knowledge Boundaries and Referent Specificity

Abstract

When asked about entities outside their knowledge boundary, LLMs routinely fabricate plausible-sounding details rather than backing off to safer, more general claims. We frame this failure through a Gricean lens: a cooperative speaker who is uncertain about a referent retreats up the specificity hierarchy, trading informativeness for truthfulness. We ask whether LLMs have the ingredients to perform this retreat. Using a T-REx-based benchmark that varies entity familiarity and referent specificity, we probe models to answer two questions: (i) do their activations encode whether a referent falls inside the knowledge boundary, and (ii) do they anticipate the specificity of the referent they are about to generate? We find that the answer to both is yes, but the two signals are not reconciled in generation. Models overwhelmingly prefer specific referents even when the entity is unknown to them, and do so even when offered correct generic alternatives. The substrate for a Gricean retreat is present, but the policy that would act on it is not. We position our findings as a first step toward Gricean alignment, training or steering objectives that couple knowledge-boundary awareness to referent-specificity during generation.

Blind Men and the Elephant: Probing the Epistemic Myopia of LLMs under Long-Tail Divergent Knowledge

Factual question answering (QA) typically assumes a single canonical answer, obscuring whether large language models (LLMs) retain divergent accounts of long-tail facts. To address this gap, we introduce ElephantBench, a closed-book knowledge probe comprising 1,094 questions generated through an auditable graph-based pipeline. The pipeline retrieves related documents from a low-exposure web corpus, identifies naturally occurring disagreements, and converts them into multi-account QA records. Each answer is verified against the originating documents and authoritative public web sources and is then reviewed by human annotators. Across 32 models, even the strongest model recovers both accounts on only 52.4% of questions, while on nearly all remaining questions it recalls one account but omits the other. Scaling model size and inference-time reasoning improve recall but do not eliminate this incompleteness. Corpus analysis further shows that exposure imbalance favors the dominant account, whereas greater minority-side exposure is associated with more complete recall. These findings establish ElephantBench as a reproducible knowledge probe for diagnosing epistemic myopia in parametric memory. More broadly, our graph-based benchmark construction pipeline provides an efficient and scalable way to turn long-tail corpora into source-traceable knowledge probes, supporting efforts to evaluate and advance the epistemic rigour of next-generation LLMs. Code is available at https://github.com/Tencent/ElephantBench.

The Quantity‐Competence Presumption: Children Use Informativeness to Calibrate Trust and Infer Speakers' Knowledge

ABSTRACT Choosing whom to learn from is critical for human learners. A well‐established strategy to do so is to track informants' past accuracy. Yet this requires both a track record and independent knowledge of the truth—neither of which is available when encountering a new informant in an unfamiliar domain. This paper proposes that the amount of information an individual communicates can serve as a proxy signal for their trustworthiness, and tests this hypothesis in children. Study 1 (N = 225, ages 4–11) pitted an informant making necessarily accurate but uninformative tautological claims (e.g., “a dibleur is a dibleur”) against one making informative claims of unknown accuracy (e.g., “a dibleur is a bird”). Children as young as four preferred to seek and endorse information from the more informative speaker—even though her accuracy had never been established. This preference was bounded: when the non‐tautological speaker's claims were clearly inaccurate, children shifted their trust to the uninformative but accurate speaker. Study 2 (N = 159, ages 4–11) tested the cognitive bases of reliance on informative individuals. It assessed whether children apply the quantity‐competence presumption: all else equal, a more informative individual implies she knows more. Children attributed greater knowledge to more informative speakers across four conditions varying in the degree and nature of the informativeness contrast. Together, these findings reveal that children treat informativeness as a graded signal of reliability, using it to bootstrap trust in unfamiliar informants when other epistemic tools are unavailable.

When Models Defer to Wrong Answers: A Robustness Audit of Source-Attributed Cues in Multiple-Choice QA

Language models often receive a question together with a claim about what another source answered. We audit whether such claims destabilize answers in multiple-choice question answering. For each item, we hold one wrong option fixed across misleading conditions and vary the cue template attached to it. We introduce \emph{neutral-conditioned misleading cue adoption rate} (NC-MCAR), which measures switches to that option only on valid cued trials where the same model first selected the gold answer under a neutral prompt. This is a measure of answer instability, not proof that the model knew the answer or that all deference is irrational. We evaluate four instruction-following models on MMLU-Pro and IndicMMLU-Pro in English, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, and Telugu. Across 220{,}000 outputs, the expert template yields 41.1\% aggregate NC-MCAR, compared with 12.5\% for the majority template. These two conditions use the same wrong option and final instruction. Filler accuracy remains well above expert-wrong accuracy, while correct-cue prompts have high valid-response accuracy. The audit documents answer instability relevant to grounding under the tested forced-choice prompts: a bare, unverified source claim can outweigh an answer that was previously consistent with the task evidence.

Remember, Verify, or Ask? Cross-Family Evaluation of Memory Commitment in LLM Agents

Persistent memory can personalize an LLM agent, but an incorrect durable update can silently distort future behavior. We study the memory-clarification boundary: whether interaction-derived information should be persisted, used only in the current context, re-verified, or clarified with the user. MCB contains 140 primary scenarios, split into 70 development and 70 held-out items, plus a separate 70-item contrast set. It evaluates both action labels and structured tool-call selection. Two non-authors independently label the 70 held-out primary and 70 contrast items (97.1% agreement, Cohen's kappa = 0.962); a blind third resolves four disagreements, replacing eight author labels by non-author majority. Across Claude and Qwen, models verify changing facts more reliably than they ask users to resolve ambiguity. Bare Qwen asks on 0/12 clarification items while verifying 12/18 freshness items. Few-shot prompting raises accuracy from 0.557 to 0.771 (paired delta = +0.214, Holm-adjusted exact McNemar p_H = 0.002), yet clarification recall remains 0.333. The policy prompt reduces erroneous persistence from 0.243 to 0.100 (p_H = 0.038), although its accuracy gain is not significant. Label-tool agreement is 57% for each Claude model and 23% for Qwen; Qwen accuracy falls from 0.557 to 0.343 (p_H = 0.047). Memory evaluation must test both stated decisions and tool-call choices.

Whether LLMs Can Navigate Beliefs and Facts Depends on How You Phrase It

Humans naturally form and express beliefs in daily communication, e.g.,"I think the answer is 3"or"I suppose that's right."Such beliefs inevitably intertwine with fact and knowledge, making the ability to handle them in tandem desirable for large language models (LLMs), as they are increasingly deployed in user-facing settings. Prior work showed that even capable LLMs exhibit a systemic weakness in acknowledging user beliefs grounded in incorrect information. We extend this evaluation to 10 LLMs across 18 epistemic expressions and find that the size and direction of this weakness depend on the verb used to express the belief, with the accuracy gap between factual and false information ranging from +50% on"I vaguely remember"to -14% on"I seriously doubt". We further show that the phenomenon stems from what we call task confusion: models default to fact-checking the underlying claim, overriding the user's stated belief. We provide evidence where chains of thought that explicitly fact-check show lower accuracy on false information than those that do not, and a single instruction can reverse the failure across verb families. Mechanistically, models attend more to false beliefs they fail to confirm, but suppressing this attention at decoding time recovers accuracy only partially and only in some models, calling for future work on intervention methods. Our findings clarify prior results and show how fact-checking, a generally desirable behavior, can interfere with belief tracking in LLMs.
