THE ROLE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN TRANSFORMING INDIA'S ECONOMY: IMPLICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT, PRODUCTIVITY, AND ECONOMIC GROWTH
Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has, shifted from a theoretical subfield of computer science into a major engine behind macroeconomic readjustment across emerging markets. For India, this technological shift shows up at an unusually tight moment. The country has a huge working-age population, but it still deals with tough issues around job formalization, uneven digital access, and stubborn structural productivity gaps. This paper looks at how AI may steer India’s economic path, by checking both direct and indirect effects on labor markets, sectoral output, and broad GDP growth. Using an analysis of current empirical data, various government publications from NITI Aayog, and economic research released up through 2026, we examine how machine learning systems, natural language processing, and automation tools are changing several key Indian industries. To observe Information Technology (IT) and Business Process Management (BPM), plus agriculture, healthcare, and financial services. It is observed that AI adoption can unlock large chances to lift aggregate worker output and create high-value technical positions. But at the same time it can also disrupt lower to mid-skill employment in a strong way, which that could widen income inequality if nothing is done to reduce the risk. We also assess what infrastructure is actually needed for more sustainable AI rollout. Things like compute capacity, data sovereignty rules, and rural connectivity matter a lot here. In the end it is arhued that India can only maximize the net positive gains from AI if it builds an active governance approach, one that blends innovation incentives with aggressive national re-skilling efforts, ethical deployment guardrails, and focused public investments.
