Abstract

LLM-based Text-to-SQL progress is reported across heterogeneous benchmarks, backbones, and inference protocols, making cross-system comparison fragile. We reframe the field as a leaderboard aggregation: we collect the metrics authors themselves report and organize them along an inference-autonomy axis spanning constrained, in-context, iterative, agentic, and reasoning-internalized generation, with traceable provenance for every cell. To anchor the aggregation empirically, we run a focused case study on Spider, comparing 8B open-source backbones with and without chain-of-thought (CoT) supervision against few-shot DeepSeek~V3 and GLM-4 baselines. Four patterns emerge: Spider gains transfer unevenly to BIRD and Spider~2.0; autonomy buys robustness at non-trivial cost; reasoning internalization sits between answer-only decoding and externally orchestrated agents; and CoT gains concentrate on Hard and Extra-Hard queries. We release a Python harness mirroring the autonomy axis so that future methods can be added directly to the leaderboard.

A Cost-Aware Agentic Architecture for NL-to-SQL over Nested Enterprise Schemas, with a New Benchmark

Natural-language-to-SQL systems have ad- vanced rapidly on academic benchmarks, yet production enterprise schemas exhibit graph- like, semi-structured, deeply nested structure that current benchmarks do not measure. We make two complementary contributions. First, we introduce the DevRev NL2SQL bench- mark: 900 execution-verified queries with nested-type and link-graph structure, accom- panied by the Semantic Depth Score (SDS), a schema-agnostic rubric for analytical reasoning depth. Second, we present a cost-aware single- generation agentic architecture whose schema- selection, metadata-retrieval, and error-repair components are designed for the requirements this regime imposes. On the DevRev NL2SQL benchmark the system attains 91.7% answer correctness, a margin of 54.6 percentage points over the next-best baseline; on the Spider 2.0 Snowflake public dataset, it is competitive with leading systems at a single-generation operating point.

BAP-SQL: Budget-Aware Observation Planning for Agentic Text-to-SQL

Tool-using agents do not merely consume observations: their actions determine what arrives next. In agentic text-to-SQL, a broad query can spend context and database work before useful evidence appears, while post-hoc compression cannot recover omitted rows or expended work. We present BAP-SQL, which treats observation formation as a budget-control stage: it estimates query risk, rewrites SQL when useful, and delegates hard limits to an independent runtime shield. Across general 4B, specialized FINER-SQL 4B, and 7B backbones, BAP-SQL improves tight-budget success. On the primary BIRD-derived setting, it gains 3.4/3.6 percentage points over matched SFT while using 4.5/5.0% fewer tokens. Matched retraining and task-level transfer associate the gain with policy-visible planning and budget-sensitive rescue. The benefit attenuates as model capability and budget increase, reverses at the loosest setting, and does not reduce database work.

Can LLMs Normalize Databases? A Benchmark and Multi-Agent Framework for Schema Normalization

Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly used to generate structured outputs, but their reliability remains unclear when those outputs must satisfy database-level constraints. We study this issue through database normalization, involving reasoning about functional dependencies, lossless join decompositions, and inter-table constraints. We introduce a Database Normalization Benchmark (DNBENCH), comprising 3,275 samples for evaluating LLM-driven database normalization from 1NF to BCNF. DNBENCH uses a three-axis protocol to measure semantic equivalence, structural accuracy, and logical validity. Across Single, Complex, and Real World levels, DNBENCH uncovers recurring failures in dependency inference, schema decomposition, and inter-table constraint reconstruction. We further propose Multi-Agent Reasoning for Schemas (MARS), which separates evidence extraction, violation diagnosis, and decomposition planning from schema generation and verification. MARS improves the DNB-SCORE by 82.0% over the single-prompt baseline. All artifacts will be released upon acceptance.
