TL;DR

A unified comparative analysis of three widely used spatially correlated centralized scattering channel models in a multi-cell massive MIMO system suggests that M-MMSE is preferable in strongly correlated environments, while lower-complexity schemes such as RZF provide a favorable trade-off in scenarios with milder spatial correlation.

Maximizing Massive MIMO’s Energy and Spectrum Efficiency via Channel Estimation

Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) is a key enabling technology for fifth-generation (5G) and beyond wireless communication systems because of its ability to greatly enhance both spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE). However, maximizing these two performance metrics simultaneously remains a challenging multi-objective optimization problem due to the conflicting effects of the transmit power, antenna deployment, and circuit power consumption. This paper investigates the EE–SE trade-off in a downlink Massive MIMO system with Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) channel estimation (CE) and different linear combining and precoding techniques. A power optimization framework based on transmit power allocation and antenna configuration is analyzed to identify operating points that maximize EE while maintaining high SE. Performance analysis of the number of base station (BS) antennas in MIMO systems, user equipment density, transmit power, and inter-cell interference on system performance is evaluated through numerical simulations. The results demonstrate that appropriately selecting the number of transmit antennas and optimizing the transmit power significantly improve the EE–SE trade-off. Furthermore, although increasing the number of antennas enhances SE, EE exhibits a non-monotonic behavior because of the additional circuit power required by the radio-frequency hardware. The findings confirm that MMSE-based CE provides higher spectral efficiency than the MR, ZF, RZF, and S-MMSE schemes, albeit at increased computational complexity, offering useful design guidelines for energy-efficient Massive MIMO networks.

Performance Comparison of ZF and MMSE Linear Detectors in MIMO Systems Under Rayleigh Fading

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology is widely adopted in modern wireless communication systems to enhance transmission rate and link reliability. Linear detection algorithms are popular MIMO receivers due to their moderate computational complexity. This paper comprehensively investigates the bit error rate (BER) performance of two classic linear detectors, namely zero-forcing (ZF) and minimum mean-squared error (MMSE), over Rayleigh fading channels. A series of Monte Carlo simulations are carried out under diverse system configurations, including different MIMO antenna scales, quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) schemes and varying signal-to-noise ratios. We first compare the performance of 2×2 MIMO with 16QAM and 4×4 MIMO with 4QAM. Furthermore, the influence of the number of receive antennas on detection performance is analyzed in detail. Simulation results demonstrate that MMSE detector outperforms ZF detector across all test scenarios, as it effectively suppresses the noise amplification effect existing in ZF detection. Increasing the number of receive antennas can bring considerable diversity gain and greatly reduce system BER. In addition, larger antenna arrays combined with low-order modulation can achieve better communication reliability. This work reveals the trade-off among antenna configuration, modulation mode and detection scheme, and provides valuable references for the practical design of MIMO wireless systems.

Pilot Scheduling on Demand: Adaptive Channel Estimation Scheme for TDD Massive MIMO With Diverse Coherence Times

In time-division duplex (TDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, users send pilot sequences for channel state estimation in a fixed time interval, which leads to pilot redundancy if users undergo longer coherence time than the prescribed channel estimation interval, and consequently reduces the net sum spectral efficiency of the systems. In this paper, we propose an adaptive channel estimation scheme for TDD massive MIMO systems, where base stations can reuse the aged channel state information (CSI) by exploiting the temporal correlation inherent in channel aging. We introduce a Fisher transformation method for temporal correlation estimation to determine the CSI estimation interval. We also derive the closed-form expressions of the spectral efficiency with channel aging effect and design a threshold to control the channel aging error introduced by CSI reuse. Numerical results demonstrate that our proposed adaptive scheme yields significant performance gains in spectral efficiency across various communication scenarios.

Asymmetric Spatial Modulation for Multiple Access in Near-Field MIMO Systems

This paper investigates asymmetric spatial modulation (ASM) for multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems operating in the near-field (NF) region. Considering spherical-wave propagation, closed-form expressions for the average bit error probability (BEP) of both users are derived under maximum likelihood (ML) detection. The analytical framework is validated through Monte Carlo simulations using five million transmitted symbols. Numerical results compare the near-field (NF) and far-field (FF) channel models. When users are located in the NF region, for example at a distance of 0.2 m from the array, the NF model achieves lower BER across the entire signal-to-noise ratio range. At an SNR of 20 dB, the BER gap between NF and FF increases from approximately 1.65e-3 for 16 transmit antennas to about $\mathbf{5. 0 1 e}-\mathbf{3}$ for 32 transmit antennas. The proposed ASM scheme also provides comparable BEP performance for the two users while enabling simultaneous transmission within the same MIMO resource block. These results show that near-field spatial characteristics can be effectively exploited for multi-user transmission in large-scale and high-frequency MIMO systems.

Correlation-Aware Minimum Mean Square Error Channel Estimation for Uplink Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Systems in Sixth-Generation Networks

Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (mMIMO) is a key enabling technology for beyond fifth-generation (B5G) and sixth-generation (6G) wireless systems; however, its performance critically depends on accurate channel state information (CSI). Conventional minimum mean square error (MMSE) channel estimators are typically derived under the assumption of spatially uncorrelated fading, which rarely holds in practical deployments due to antenna coupling, limited spacing, and structured propagation environments. As a result, spatial correlation can significantly degrade estimation accuracy. This paper investigates uplink channel estimation for mMIMO systems under spatially correlated channels. First, an analytical characterization of the effect of correlation on the traditional MMSE estimator is presented. Then, two correlation-aware estimation techniques are developed. The first approach introduces a regularized MMSE formulation to improve robustness in correlated scenarios. The second approach proposes a pre-whitening-based MMSE estimator that exploits channel covariance information to transform the correlated channel into an equivalent white channel prior to estimation. Closed-form solutions for the optimal filters are derived, and their complexity is calculated. The results of the simulation verify that the pre-whitening based estimator outperforms the conventional and regularized MMSE estimators over a wide interval for the value of the signal to noise ratio (SNR) and the correlation coefficient.

Transform-Aided Performance Enhancement in Massive MIMO-OTFS Systems over Various Fading Channels

Massive Multiple Input Multiple Output or massive-MIMO systems are a cornerstone technology in modern wireless communications, especially in 5G and beyond networks. Including Orthogonal Time Frequency Space modulation (OTFS) in Massive MIMO makes the systems more robust, with further promise for robust performance in both high-mobility and multipath-rich environments. OTFS taps into the delay-Doppler domain representation of the wireless channel, ensuring greater immunity to time-frequency variations and enhanced channel estimation compared to traditional modulation methods. While going through the detailed literature available for OTFS based Massive MIMO system it was seen that a very less work has been carried out in exploring the potential and performance enhancements of the system if the system were implemented using some diverse signal transforms such as DWT, FrFT etc, moreover it has not yet been explored as to see the effect of fading onto these systems by deployment of these diverse transforms, Therefore it leaves a gap in the available literature. This paper focusses on the improvement of the Massive MIMO-based OTFS systems by implementing the systems using more advanced signal transforms such as Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and Fractional Fourier Transform (FrFT) under various fading channels. The simulation results have shown significant improvement in performance when implemented using these advanced transforms.
