IoT based Voice Assisted Medication and Alert System for Visually Impaired
Abstract
Self-management of personal health and medication remains a major challenge for visually impaired individuals. This paper presents the development of an Internet of Things (IoT)based voice-assisted system designed to enhance accessibility and enable continuous real-time health monitoring. The system utilizes an ESP32 microcontroller integrated with MAX30102 and MLX90614 sensors to measure vital parameters such as heart rate, blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), and body temperature. The acquired sensor data is evaluated against predefined threshold values, and upon detecting abnormal conditions, audible alerts are generated and the data is transmitted to caregivers through Wi-Fi or a mobile hotspot. In addition, a computer-based medication identification module employing Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Text-to-Speech (TTS) technologies is implemented to read and vocalize information from medicine labels, allowing users to verify medications independently. System parameters and alert information are managed using a Firebase Realtime Database, enabling remote monitoring and maintenance. Experimental results demonstrate reliable vital sign monitoring, timely alert generation, and effective medication label recognition, indicating the feasibility of the proposed system for assistive healthcare applications.
