Does Renewable Energy Increase Trade Integration? New Evidence from BRICS-T Countries Using Fourier Methods

Aug 2026 · Journal of Economic Integration · 0 citations · 32 references

Abstract

The motivation to reduce global climate change and advance sustainable economic development is leading to a major overhaul of energy and trade policies in emerging markets. This paper examines the dynamic relationship between trade openness (as a measure of trade integration), renewable energy output and carbon dioxide emissions in the BRICS-T countries, for the 1991-2021 period. A key contribution of this study is the use of latest Fourier-based panel methods. Fourier DOLS results provide evidence for the Pollution Haven Hypothesis in China and India, implying that carbon dioxide emissions have been higher as a result of increased trade openness. More importantly, according to the Fourier Toda-Yamamoto causality results, the causal link runs essentially from renewable energy and CO2 emissions to trade openness. This, in essence, suggests that trade openness is grounded on energy systems and carbon intensity rather than trade liberalization in the BRICS-T bloc

The Dynamic Trade-Off between Trade Openness and Renewable Energy Share in Indonesia

This study examines the dynamic trade-off in the relationship between trade openness and the renewable energy share in Indonesia by distinguishing between short-run and long-run dynamics. Using annual data from 1990 to 2021, the study employs the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach. The results reveal a clea...

Revisiting The Nexus Between Globalization, Energy Use, And Carbon Emissions: An Empirical Analysis for ASEAN Economies

This paper investigates the relationship between non-renewable energy consumption, globalization and carbon emissions under the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis, based on the observations of ASEAN economies between 1990 and 2023, which are unbalanced panel data. A panel cointegration analysis is used to exp...

Renewable Energy, Energy Import Dependence, and Trade Balance in Türkiye

This paper analyzes how renewable energy use and dependence on imported energy influence Türkiye’s trade balance. The study is grounded in the argument that economies relying heavily on imported fossil fuels are more exposed to external balance pressures, whereas domestic renewable energy use may help reduce this expos...
