Wavelength-scale optional stopping, critical Feynman-Kac gauges, and capacitary spectral inequalities

Abstract

We develop two Brownian stopping methods: one uses hitting probabilities and capacity, the other moments of weighted exit distributions. On a closed $m$-dimensional Riemannian manifold, $m\geq 2$, the first gives low-energy spectral inequalities for equilibrium measures supported on sets of zero volume. Combining scales gives heat observability and null controllability from a full-support measure carried by a dense set of Hausdorff dimension $m-2$, minimal under a bounded $H^1$-trace condition. For every nondecreasing unbounded $\Phi$ with $\Phi(4E)\leq D\Phi(E)$, the measure can be chosen so that the optimal spectral constant is comparable to $\Phi(E)$ and the small-time control cost to $T^{-1/2}\Phi(T^{-1})^{1/2}$. Squaring the Feynman-Kac martingale doubles the potential: for radial $V$, the boundary second moment is log-convex in $\log r$ if $r^2V(r)$ is nondecreasing, wherever the regular solution of $(\tfrac12\Delta+2V)g=0$ stays positive; the factor $2$ is sharp when $V(0)>0$. On small geodesic balls, weighted second moments give an almost-monotone frequency and a weighted three-radius inequality; bounds for its logarithmic derivative give doubling estimates, which, after a ground-state transform, feed the Remez theorem of Logunov-Malinnikova. The normalised first-moment exit law gives an averaged boundary-variance identity for Laplace eigenfunctions. At $r=c\lambda^{-1/2}$, outside a set carrying $O(c^{2/m})$ of the $\varphi^2$-mass, the component of $\{\varphi(x)\varphi>0\}\cap B(x,r)$ through $x$ contains a concentric ball of nearly full radius, fills nearly all of $B(x,r)$, and nearly matches its first Dirichlet eigenvalue. First-moment stopping also controls positive superlevel components. Reflected Brownian motion and local time give boundary-to-collar $L^\infty$ estimates for Steklov eigenfunctions on bounded Lipschitz domains, and an $L^2$ estimate for $C^2$ domains.

Optimal geometric barriers for weighted observability of heat semigroups on metric measure spaces

Weighted integrated observability inequalities for heat equations usually involve a small-time factor of the form $e^{-\gamma/t}$. We prove that this scale is not an artefact of Carleman or spectral methods: it is forced by the geometry of the observation set. Let $A$ be a nonnegative self-adjoint operator on sections of a finite-rank Euclidean vector bundle over a doubling metric measure space, satisfying ultracontractivity, Davies-Gaffney estimates (equivalently, finite speed of propagation for the wave equation) and a pointwise local Weyl law. If a weighted integrated observability inequality holds on a measurable set $\omega$, for a fixed horizon $T\in(0,+\infty]$ and an admissible weight $h$, then, for every $0<\kappa<\frac{1}{2}$, $$ h(t)\leq A_{T,\kappa}\exp\left(-\kappa\frac{\mathcal{L}(\omega)^2}{t}\right),\qquad 0<t<T, $$ where $\mathcal{L}(\omega)$ is the essential maximal distance to $\omega$, replaced by any finite radius when $\mathcal{L}(\omega)=+\infty$. Thus, for $h(t)=e^{-\gamma/t}$, necessarily $\gamma\geq\mathcal{L}(\omega)^2/2$. This settles, with the optimal threshold, the maximal-distance lower bound for the infinite-time constant left open in earlier work. In the control-norm convention, the fast-control rate is at least $\mathcal{L}(\omega)^2/4$, recovering Miller's bound. The proof rests on the spectral packet $(\cosh(r\sqrt A)-1)e^{-tA}$. A pointwise Weyl law gives its sharp lower growth, while finite propagation speed and a weak-kernel Kannai transmutation formula make it exponentially small on $\omega$. Without kernel continuity or compact resolvent, we develop pointwise spectral measures and weak wave kernels. The framework covers Laplace-type operators on compact Riemannian manifolds, coupled heat systems, Schr\"odinger operators on $\mathbb{R}^d$, equiregular sub-Laplacians and Grushin models, and $\delta'$-coupled Laplacians on metric graphs.

Wasserstein gradient flows for Coulomb discrepancies

We study the long-time behavior of the Wasserstein gradient flow of the squared Maximum Mean Discrepancy (MMD) between a probability measure $\rho$ and a target measure $\mu$, where the underlying kernel is given by a Coulomb potential. For $L^\infty$ target densities $\mu$, we establish the existence of global weak solutions starting from arbitrary Borel probability measures and prove that the density $\rho_t$ belongs to $L^\infty$ for any $t>0$. We also show that the H\"older norm can grow exponentially in time. On the flat torus ${\mathbb{T}}^\mathsf{d}$, we prove a global metric PL inequality for every finite-Coulomb-energy source and nearly uniform target. For general bounded, uniformly positive targets, we prove exponential decay of the squared MMD without requiring a lower bound on the initial data, using a defective PL inequality. We also prove that the usual PL inequality may fail when the target vanishes only at one point and that, when $\mathsf{d}\ge2$, no PL constant can hold uniformly over all targets satisfying a prescribed lower bound. On ${\mathbb{R}}^\mathsf{d}$, for $\mathsf{d}\ge2$, under radial symmetry, source-support inclusion, and target-positivity assumptions, we establish a PL inequality and exponential convergence. On the unrestricted whole-space class, neither a multiplicative squared-MMD decay modulus uniform over the initial datum nor a global PL inequality can hold. Finally, in every dimension and in both spatial settings, we prove that every Lagrangian critical point coincides with the target when $(\rho-\mu)^+$ is absolutely continuous. In dimension two, the energy supplies uniform tightness. This implies that if our constructed solutions have finite energy at some positive time, then they converge to the target narrowly and strongly in negative-order Sobolev spaces.

Mixed Poincar\'e and Fefferman--Phong inequalities for measure potentials on $2$-PI spaces

We prove a fixed-outer-domain content--capacity estimate for every positive codimensional gain on an unbounded complete $2$-PI space. As its principal measure-theoretic consequence, a one-sided ball-growth condition for an arbitrary positive Radon measure $\pi$ yields \[ \pi(K)\lesssim\operatorname{cap}_{2,\omega}(K;\Lambda_0B) \] uniformly for compact $K\subset B$. No doubling or lower-dimensional regularity is imposed on $\pi$. This capacitary domination gives a representative-independent mean-zero trace inequality. On normalized balls, it is equivalent, modulo the ambient Poincar\'e energy, to the mixed $d\omega\,d\pi$ oscillation required in Fefferman--Phong reductions. A standard bounded-overlap localization then yields two-sided global Fefferman--Phong inequalities, cover-independent energy norms, and a concrete realization of the associated homogeneous energy completion. The abstract results are verified for Euclidean $A_2$ weights with generalized Schr\"odinger measure potentials, reverse-H\"older function potentials, Carnot groups, and lower-dimensional singular measures. We compare the local trace conclusion with existing two-weighted Poincar\'e and Sobolev embedding theorems: those routes apply under additional doubling or dimension assumptions on the target measure, whereas our capacity conclusion also supplies absolute continuity with respect to variational capacity and a fixed outer domain. The Euclidean application yields form-domain equivalence, smooth form cores, self-adjoint realization, resolvent energy estimates, and local critical-multiplier bounds. Finally, the method supplies the mixed-measure step missing from a previously published $A_2$ generalized Schr\"odinger argument and gives a fixed-dilate finite-scale $A_2$ extension, for the naturally augmented measure, of a later $A_1$ theory.

Top-Degree Global Solvability for Tube Complexes in Gevrey Ultradistributions

Let $s>1$, let $M$ be a connected, non-compact, oriented real-analytic manifold, and let $\omega_1,\ldots,\omega_m$ be real-valued closed $1$-forms of Gevrey order $s$ on $M$. We study the differential complex naturally associated with this family on $M\times\mathbb{T}^m$. We prove that its top-degree operator is globally solvable in Roumieu Gevrey ultradistributions, or equivalently that the corresponding top-degree cohomology vanishes. No global hypoellipticity assumption and no arithmetic condition on the periods of the defining forms are required. The proof is carried out in the physical variables and combines fiber translations, a local normal form, and a transport formula along paths in the base manifold. These tools yield propagation of Gevrey regularity, non-confinement of Gevrey singularities, and the support control needed to apply an abstract solvability criterion. The result highlights a sharp contrast with the compact setting, where compatibility conditions are unavoidable and solvability for compatible data may depend on exponential small-denominator conditions.

Entropic optimal transport need not select a zero-temperature limit

We construct a compact metric space with an atomless probability measure and a bounded Lipschitz cost for which the entropic optimal-transport minimisers have no zero-temperature weak limit. More precisely, $P_\varepsilon$ does not converge as $\varepsilon\downarrow0$. In the example, every unregularised minimiser is singular with respect to $\mu\otimes\mu$, so that the entropy on the optimal face is identically $+\infty$. We describe the cluster set by \[ \operatorname{Clust}(P_\varepsilon)=\{P_w:w\in\mathcal W\}, \] where $P_w$ is the mixture of the two zero-cost graph couplings with weight $w$, and where $\mathcal W\subset[0,1]$ is a non-degenerate compact interval. We then compute two explicit points $w^-<w^+$ in this interval. This shows that compactness, atomlessness, and Lipschitz regularity of the cost do not imply zero-temperature convergence. We also present a compactness theorem for the general problem. If $C\in L^1(\mu\otimes\nu)$ is continuous and bounded from below on Polish spaces, then the zero-temperature cluster set is a nonempty weakly compact connected subset of the optimal face. In the proof, we apply the cluster-point theorem of Bernton, Ghosal, and Nutz and the continuity of $\varepsilon\mapsto\pi_\varepsilon$. Finally, we give local and exterior first-order criteria for full convergence and cluster membership. We show that nonconvergence is possible, but only through a connected continuum of optimal plans.

One-Dimensional Divergence-Type Jacobi Operators Driven by The Doubling Map

We study one-dimensional Jacobi operators of divergence-gradient type on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0})$, with coefficients generated by the doubling map, $a_n(x)=a(2^n x \mathrm{mod} 1)$. For continuous positive sampling functions, we show that the almost-sure essential spectrum is an interval containing the bottom of the spectrum. Under the assumption $a\in C^1(\mathbb{T})$, we prove square-root asymptotics for the integrated density of states and obtain a small-energy expansion for the Lyapunov exponent as $E\to0^+$. The leading term of the Lyapunov exponent is linear and positive precisely under a nondegeneracy condition on the sampling function. In this case, we prove a large-deviation estimate for the transfer matrices with an explicit rate depending on $E$. As consequences, we obtain local H\"older continuity of the Lyapunov exponent and the integrated density of states near the bottom of the spectrum, as well as the Anderson localization. Some of these results extend the small-coupling results of Chulaevsky--Spencer and Bourgain--Schlag for Schr\"odinger operators generated by the doubling map to divergence-gradient type operators. The arguments adapt methods from those works, but require uniform control in the small-energy parameter and refined correlation estimates reflecting the divergence-gradient structure.
