Abstract

Accurate channel modelling is a key prerequisite for planning and improvement of wireless communication networks. Obtaining a precise channel model is therefore a pivotal task for telecommunication engineers. One method that has gained in popularity in recent years is ray-tracing. Given the widespread use, it is important to understand the strengths and weaknesses of ray-tracing and to know what performance is to be expected in praxis. In this paper, we compare a large dataset of outdoor measurements of signal strength with simulations and assess the obtained error changes given different antenna models, 3D models with different levels of detail and various simulation settings. The benefits of material calibration are also examined. Diffuse reflection and accurate digital-twin are identified as essential for signal strength prediction, whereas diffraction has a negligible impact in the considered scenario. The material calibration turned out to be beneficial, yielding a consistent mean absolute error improvement of approximately 1 dB.

A Large-Scale LoRa Measurement Campaign for Path-Loss Modeling in Urban and Suburban Environments

Low-power wide-area networks, particularly Long-Range (LoRa), are important enablers of large-scale internet of things deployments in urban environments. However, inconsistencies in measurement methodologies have led to limitations in the accuracy and reproducibility of path loss models. This work presents a large-scal...

Exploring the Applicability of Three Popular Models for Predicting the Received Field Strength of HF Sky‐Wave Propagation and Communication

High‐frequency (HF) radio signals rely on ionospheric reflection and refraction to enable long‐range and transcontinental transmission, making them essential for military command, emergency response, and strategic communications. The received field strength is a key parameter for quantifying propagation conditions and...

Semi empirical path-loss modeling and cross-validation of industrial links at 5 GHz

Introduction: Wireless links in industrial plants are exposed to metallic structures, absorbing materials, machinery, and multipath conditions that can reduce the accuracy of general propagation models. Objective: To develop and validate a semi-empirical path-loss model for 5 GHz point-to-point links in a paper and sug...

Site-Specific Channel Generation Integrating ML-Predicted Propagation Parameters in the FR3 Upper Mid-Band

A novel framework for generating high-fidelity channels by integrating site-specific propagation parameters predicted via machine learning (ML) using a Residual Network to predict path loss and delay spread from spatial features and uses these values to appropriately scale and correct the cluster powers in the hybrid m...

Angular–Temporal Validation of Deterministic Digital Twins for Indoor FR3 Channel Modeling

This paper presents a measurement-driven assessment of a deterministic Digital Twin (DT) for indoor radio propagation in the 10-15 GHz sub-band of the Frequency Range 3 (FR3) band, which covers from 7 to 24 GHz, using angular-temporal channel metrics derived from directional measurements. An indoor measurement campaign...

Empirical Measurement of 5G Mobile Signal Path Loss in Southern and Northern Urban Metropolis of Nigeria

Accurate characterisation of large-scale radio attenuation is important for fifth-generation (5G) network planning, particularly in heterogeneous urban environments. This study reports a drive-test assessment conducted in Lagos and Ibadan in southern Nigeria and Abuja and Kano in northern Nigeria at 3.5-3.6 GHz. The re...
