Abstract

The study examines the role of non-formal education in developing environmental awareness among primary school students and its potential contribution to local sustainable development. The research was conducted in four public schools in Gori Municipality, Georgia, involving 120 primary school students. A mixed-methods approach was used, combining pre- and post-intervention questionnaires, participant observations during non-formal educational activities, and analysis of students’ reflections. The intervention included educational excursions, biodiversity observations, environmental campaigns, and school-based sustainability projects related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The findings demonstrate positive changes in students’ environmental awareness, understanding of the SDGs, knowledge of healthy lifestyles, and perception of field trips as opportunities for learning rather than entertainment. The results indicate that non-formal education can contribute to practical skills, motivation, critical thinking, and responsible attitudes toward the environment. These educational outcomes may create conditions for local sustainable development by encouraging responsible resource use, environmentally oriented initiatives, and stronger cooperation between schools and local communities. The paper also discusses the broader social and economic relevance of environmental education while recognizing that direct long-term economic effects require further investigation. Recommendations are proposed for the systematic integration of non-formal environmental education into primary schooling.
