Purified Dietary Aflatoxin B1 Does Not Impair Broiler Growth Across a Broad Exposure Range but Elicits Subclinical Biological and Tissue Responses

Abstract

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) toxicity in poultry is often investigated using naturally contaminated ingredients, which can confound its effects with co-occurring mycotoxins and changes in feed quality. Male Arbor Acres broilers received a common basal diet supplemented with purified AFB1 at nominal concentrations of 0, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, or 200 μg/kg for 42 d. The reported analyses detected no significant treatment differences in growth performance or major organ indices. Hepatic antioxidant enzyme activities and total antioxidant capacity decreased at selected exposures, while serum antioxidant enzymes, cytokines, and hematological indices showed selective responses. Jejunal villus height was lower in the nominal 50–200 μg/kg groups. Renal tubular lesions were most evident at 50–100 μg/kg. Bile-acid profiling in four selected groups showed compartment-specific differences. These findings suggest that selected biological and morphological responses may occur without detectable growth impairment under the conditions tested. Isolated biomarker differences remain exploratory, and the data do not establish a formal ranking of endpoint sensitivity or a dietary safety threshold.

Subchronic Low-Dose Dietary Methoxychlor Exposure Causes Hepatic and Renal Injury in Broilers: In Vivo Evidence and Network Toxicology Predictions.

Methoxychlor (MXC) is a persistent organochlorine pesticide that may enter poultry production through contaminated feed. However, the effects of prolonged low-dose dietary exposure in avian species remain poorly characterized. In this study, male broilers were fed diets containing 0, 2, 10, 50, or 200 μg/kg MXC for 42...

Effects of Yeast Cell Wall Supplementation in Broiler Chickens Under Dietary Aflatoxin Challenge

Aflatoxins (AFLAs) are highly prevalent mycotoxins in poultry production and are known to impair immune function and may reduce vaccine responsiveness. Therefore, this study evaluated whether dietary supplementation with yeast cell wall (YCW) could modulate the immune response under AFLA challenge and support vaccine r...

Preliminary Tolerability Assessment of Continuous Dietary Meloxicam in Broilers

The anti-inflammatory activity of antimicrobial growth promoters (AGPs) has been proposed as one mechanism contributing to their beneficial effects on broiler performance, raising interest in pharmacological modulation of inflammation as a non-antibiotic strategy. This proof-of-concept dose-escalation study evaluated t...

Protective Effects of a Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.)-Based Phytogenic Feed Additive Against Aflatoxin B1 in Diet-Challenged Broiler Chickens

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a major mycotoxin in poultry feeds that can impair growth and damage multiple organs. This study evaluated whether dietary rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) could mitigate AFB1-induced alterations in broiler chickens. Forty-five one-day-old male Ross 308 broilers were assigned for 21 days to a...

Biomarkers of Exposure to Low Dietary Fumonisin, Deoxynivalenol, and Zearalenone Concentrations in Turkeys and Chickens

Fusarium mycotoxins are major contaminants of human and animal feed and pose significant risks to health. A recent recommendation from the European Commission drastically decreased the maximum tolerated concentrations of fumonisins (FBs) and deoxynivalenol (DON) in poultry feed. The objectives of this study were to cha...
