Abstract

Hydrophobic emulsions (HEs) are widely used to improve the moisture resistance of cement-based materials, but their adsorption on cement particle surfaces can form a physical barrier that retards hydration and compromises mechanical performance. Herein, a polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE) was introduced into hydrophobic emulsion-modified calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement mortars to regulate the interfacial adsorption behavior between HE droplets and CSA cement particles. The coupled effects of PCE and HE were systematically investigated through fluidity, mechanical strength, rheology, hydration heat, pore structure, water absorption, adsorption capacity, and ζ-potential analyses. The results show that 1% PCE provided the best overall balance between the performance recovery and hydrophobic functionality under the investigated conditions. Compared with the hydrophobic mortar without the PCE, the addition of 1% PCE increased fluidity by 25% and enhanced the 28 day compressive strength by 129% while maintaining the inherently low water absorption. Adsorption capacity and ζ-potential analyses further supported competitive adsorption between the PCE and HE at the CSA cement interface. The incorporation of the PCE alleviated the hydration retardation induced by HE and improved the pore structure without compromising the hydrophobic functionality of the mortar. This work provides an interfacial regulation strategy for balancing workability, hydration, mechanical performance, and moisture resistance in hydrophobic CSA cement mortars.

Basalt Fiber Surface Modification through Polydopamine Hydrophilic Coating for Oil Well Cements

Basalt fiber (BF) is a promising toughening material for oil well cement owing to its high mechanical strength and thermal stability; however, its smooth surface and poor dispersibility often result in weak interfacial bonding and limited toughening efficiency. To overcome these limitations, a mussel-inspired two-s...

Multicomponent Modification of Polyethylene-Based Films for Enhanced Hydrophobicity and Balanced Gas Transport and Water Vapor Barrier Properties

Hydrophobic gas-permeable polyethylene films with balanced water vapor resistance and gas transport properties are desirable for membrane applications; however, achieving an effective balance between moisture barrier performance and gas permeability remains challenging. In this work, dense non-porous polyethylene-based...

In situ polymerised KH570-OH-BNNS/PAS composite emulsion achieves superior lubricity and load-bearing capacity.

Conventional emulsion lubricants suffer from issues such as oil film rupture under high loads, poor lubrication stability and insufficient load-carrying capacity. To address these issues, this study developed an acrylic polymer emulsion (PAS) with a simple composition and KH570-modified hydroxylated boron nitride nanos...

Long chain alkyl grafted cellulose and PBST synergistically reinforce PLA: Balanced strength, toughness, and barrier properties.

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a promising biodegradable polymer, yet its inherent brittleness, poor barrier properties, and slow crystallization rate limit its application in food packaging. In this study, hydrophobically modified microcrystalline cellulose (eMCC) and poly(butylene succinate-co-terephthalate) (PBST) were...
