Effect of Root Inducing Biostimulants on Vegetative Recovery, Establishment and Phenological Development of Globe Artichoke Under Field Conditions: Preliminary Results

Abstract

Globe artichoke ( Cynara cardunculus L. var. scolymus (L.) Fiori) is a perennial crop widely cultivated in Mediterranean regions. Spinoso sardo, a Sardinian varietal type propagated agamically through quiescent buds (“ovoli”), is often characterized by heterogeneous growth, asynchronous phenological development, variable yields and sanitary constraints. This study evaluated the effects of two commercial root‐targeted biostimulants (Radifarm® and Kendal Root®), applied to ovoli and/or as foliar treatments, either individually or in combination, under open‐field forcing conditions. Biostimulant treatments were associated with trends in phenological development over time, with treated plants generally showing more advanced BBCH stages compared with the control, although differences were not statistically significant at p  < 0.05. In contrast, biostimulant applications significantly reduced the incidence of plants failing to resume vegetative growth, with the highest proportion of missing plants observed in the control treatment (χ2 = 14.16, df = 6, p  = 0.028). Overall, the results suggest that root‐targeted biostimulants may support early plant establishment and influence phenological progression of globe artichoke under forcing cultivation conditions. Further research is required to confirm these effects under different environments and growing conditions.

Response of Clove (Syzygium aromaticum L.) Seedlings to the Foliar Application of Major and Micro Nutrients in the Nursery

Clove (Syzygium aromaticum L.) is an important perennial spice crop, but its seedlings exhibit slow early growth and generally require a prolonged nursery period before attaining transplantable size. Inadequate or imbalanced availability of essential nutrients may further restrict seedling growth and vigour. Foliar app...

Evaluation of the Response of Vinca Catharanthus Roseus (L.) G. Don to Biofertilization and Foliar Application of 24-Epibrassinolide in Selected Vegetative, Floral, And Chemical Traits

To evaluate the expected response of vinca to biofertilization and foliar application of the plant growth regulator EBL, the study employed a 3×3 factorial experiment in a completely randomized design with three replicates, giving a total of 27 experimental units. The biofertilization factor included an uninoculated tr...

ALLELOPATHIC EFFECTS OF AQUEOUS LEAF AND ROOT EXTRACTS OF Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. ON COWPEA GERMINATION AND EARLY SEEDLING GROWTH IN BAUCHI, NIGERIA

Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. is widely cultivated across semi-arid regions of Nigeria due to its rapid biomass accumulation and ecological adaptability. However, its residues may release allelochemicals that impede the performance of adjacent crops. This study evaluated the allelopathic influence of aqueous leaf and...

Allelopathic effects of Hyptis suaveolens leaf extract on germination and early seedling growth of two local varieties (gero and dauro) of Pennisetum glaucum L.

Allelopathy is a biological phenomenon in which plants release chemical compounds that influence the germination, growth and development of neighboring plants. Hyptis suaveolens is an invasive aromatic species known to produce allelochemicals capable of suppressing the establishment of cultivated crops. This study eval...

Multistage Evaluation of Plant Growth-Promoting Microorganisms in Leucaena leucocephala and Megathyrsus maximus cv. Mombasa: Controlled Experiments and Preliminary Field Observations in Northern Peru

Plant growth-promoting microorganisms (PGPM) may contribute to sustainable forage production, but their effects can vary with host species and plant trait. Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas putida, Trichoderma harzianum, and Trichoderma viride were evaluated alongside a non-inoculated control in Leucaena leucocephala and...

Effect of Arbuscular Mycorrhiza on the Productivity of Pakchong Grass (Pennisetum purpureum cv. Thailand) under Drought Stress

To achieve meat self-sufficiency by 2026, increasing the production of forage the basal feed for ruminants is crucial. Pakchong grass, a promising forage crop, suffers from reduced productivity due to water limitations and climate change induced temperature rises and heatwaves. Mycorrhizae, through symbiosis with plant...
