Abstract

This study explores the Artificial Intelligence (AI) revolution in Higher Education Institutions, focusing on the determinants for prospects and constraints for quality education provision. To this end, the study employed an exploratory research design based on the secondary data retrieved from databases to enrich the information concerning AI integration in the educational system as a new age for technological transformation for enhancing the quality of teaching and learning outcomes in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Based on the thematic analysis of the information obtained, the study found prospects of AI in HEIs, including improved teaching and learning process, increase of efficiency, and making informed decision making by HEIs academicians, administrators, and management, spearhead the equitable access of teaching and learning resources across the geo-global dimensions, and acts as students personalized support on the brainstorming of unknown issues. The study also established the constraints associated with the adoption of AI, including limitations of the AI infrastructural system, technological integration literacy gaps, and the presence of unclear guidelines, policies, and regulatory bodies for harnessing the fruits of the new technology. The study concluded that HEIs utilize the opportunities created by the AI to improve the quality of education, however hindered by the increased risk of disparities between AI beneficiaries due to infrastructural and knowledge gaps. Therefore, the study recommends that policy and decision makers, administrators, and researchers jointly work to resolve the constraints associated with the AI usage for sustainable educational provision across the country.
