Effects of a Weak Interlayer Zone on the Tensile Mechanical Properties and Failure Characteristics of Rock

Abstract

Brazilian tests on limestone with weak interlayers (thickness 0.1–1.35 mm) were performed using RMT and 3D scanning. Results show that BTS decreases nonlinearly with increasing thickness and exhibits a complex angle dependence: fracture length and roughness first rise then peak at 30°, while microscopic features of rock fracture surfaces are mainly represented by four types of failure: limestone matrix failure, interface failure, interlayer failure, and cross interlayer failure. Energy densities increase nonlinearly with angle but decline with thickness, severely reducing storage capacity. Interlayer samples suffer varying degrees of damage to their energy storage capacity due to variations in interlayer angle and thickness compared to samples without weak interlayer interactions. These data‐driven findings provide robust reference for engineering anisotropy problems.

Fatigue Characteristics and Fracture Mechanism of Preflawed Sandstone Subjected to Cyclic Loading

This study comprehensively investigates the fatigue characteristics and fracture behavior of flawed sandstone specimens. Triaxial monotonic and cyclic loading tests are conducted on flawed sandstone specimens with various flaw inclination angles ( β  = 0°, 30°, 60°, and 90°). The results indicated that the charac...

Microstructure and properties of additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloy under dynamic impact

An investigation into the rate-dependent mechanical response and microstructural evolution of Ti-6Al-4V produced by additive manufacturing (AM) is presented. Three strain rate levels (1439 s−1, 2334 s−1, and 3302 s−1) were applied via Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) testing. The as-built alloy consists mainly of α...

Experimental determination of interlayer bond shear stiffness at different conditions

A durable and well-performing interlayer bond is essential to ensuring the long-term service life of asphalt pavements. To evaluate the shear stiffness at the interface between asphalt layers, a new Cyclic Testing of Interlayer Bond apparatus (CTIB) has been used to test double-layer asphalt specimens. An extensive tes...
