Abstract

We say that a matrix over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ is positive definite if it is symmetric and each of its leading principal minors is a nonzero square in $\mathbb{F}_q$. In previous work of the authors [J. Algebra, 2025], the entrywise positivity preservers on $M_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ were classified for every $n\geq 2$, with one remaining case: $n=2$, $q\equiv 1\pmod 4$, and $q$ not a square. We settle this case by proving that every positivity preserver on $M_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ is injective on the set $\mathbb{F}_q^+$ of nonzero squares whenever $q\equiv 1\pmod 4$. The proof combines an idempotent reduction of positivity preservers with a well-known property of quadratic characters. This yields the complete classification of entrywise positivity preservers over every finite field and in every fixed dimension.

A Finite-order Characterization of Entrywise Positivity Preservers

Fix $I = (0,\rho)$, where $0<\rho\leq\infty$, and let $\mathbb{P}_n(I)$ be the set of positive semidefinite $n\times n$ matrices with entries in $I$. A longstanding problem in matrix theory is to characterize the functions $f: I \to \mathbb{R}$ for which the entrywise calculus $f[A] = [f(a_{ij})]_{i,j = 1}^{n}$ preserves positive semidefiniteness for all $A \in \mathbb{P}_n(I)$. We characterize these functions exactly: if $f\in C^{2n-2}(I)$ and $\mathcal{E} = x\frac{d}{dx}$, then this holds if and only if $$ f^{(k)}(x)\geq 0 \quad (0\leq k\leq n-1) \qquad\text{and}\qquad \bigl[\mathcal{E}^{i+j}f(x)\bigr]_{i,j = 0}^{n-1}\succeq 0 $$ for every $x\in I$. Regularization then removes all a priori smoothness: for $n\geq2$, every preserver belongs to $C^{2n-4}(I)$ and the same characterization holds by interpreting the last two derivatives in the sense of distributions. As applications, we recover classical results of FitzGerald--Horn and Vasudeva, and obtain a complete classification of generalized polynomials with prescribed real exponents and arbitrary coefficients. We also determine optimal constants in entrywise domination inequalities under finite regularity, extend the sharp finite-sum thresholds of Belton--Guillot--Khare--Putinar and Khare--Tao to positive mixtures of powers, and answer a question of Khare and Tao by showing that no finite collection of matrices with entries strictly inside $I$ can detect positivity preservation on $\mathbb{P}_n(I)$.

The Cone Generated by Positive Semidefinite Mean Polynomials

We study the cone $\mathcal{M}_{n,2d}$ of nonnegative mean polynomials---real $n$-variate forms of degree $2d$ that can be expressed as weighted power means $M_{q,p}(Y,w)$ with $q>p$. This cone simultaneously generalises the cone of sums of squares $\Sigma_{n,2d}$ and the cone of sums of nonnegative circuit polynomials $\mathcal{C}_{n,2d}$. We prove that every square of an arbitrary polynomial belongs to the mean polynomial preprime $T_{\mathrm{mean}}$, that $T_{\mathrm{mean}}$ is strongly generating, and consequently that every polynomial strictly positive on a compact semialgebraic set admits a representation with mean polynomial certificates. We exhibit the Robinson form $\hat{R}$ as a separating example that lies in $\mathcal{M}_{4,4}$ but outside $\mathrm{SOSONC}_{4,4}$. Finally, we outline a convergent hierarchy of lower bounds for polynomial optimization based on the mean polynomial cone and discuss tractable depth-truncated approximations via signomial programming.

Spaces of triangularizable matrices (III): Perfect non-quadratically closed fields with characteristic $2$

Given a field $\mathbb{F}$ and an integer $n \geq 2$, denote by $t_n(\mathbb{F})$ the greatest possible dimension for a vector space of $n$-by-$n$ matrices over $\mathbb{F}$ in which every element is triangularizable. It was recently proved that $t_n(\mathbb{F})=\frac{n(n+1)}{2}$ if and only if $\mathbb{F}$ is not quadratically closed, with the possible exception of finite fields with characteristic $2$ and less than $n-1$ elements. In this article, we prove that the equality $t_n(\mathbb{F})=\frac{n(n+1)}{2}$ holds for all perfect non-quadratically closed fields with characteristic $2$ -- with the possible exception of fields with cardinality $2$ -- and for these fields we obtain a key result for a future analysis of the spaces that have the critical dimension $t_n(\mathbb{F})$.

Lattice vertex algebras over a field of positive characteristic: degenerate cases

A vertex operator algebra $V_L$ associated with a positive definite even lattice $L$ has a standard integral form, which we denote it by $V_{L,\mathbb{Z}} $. If $F$ is a field of characteristic $p>0$, it is known that $V_{L,F}:= F\otimes_\mathbb{Z} V_{L,\mathbb{Z}}$, a vertex algebra over $F$, is simple if and only if $(p, \det(L))=1$. In this article, we study $V_{L,F}$ when the characteristic of $F$ divides $\det(L)$. We determine the radical $\mathrm{Rad}$ of the invariant bilinear form on $V_{L,F}$, show that it is the unique maximal ideal and study the quotient vertex algebra $V_{L,F}/\mathrm{Rad}$.

Generic Nullity of Generalized Commutators

We study the generic nullity of generalized commutator operators \[L_{\mathbf{A}}(X)=s_{k+1}(A_1,\cdots,A_k,X)\] on matrix algebras, where $s_{k+1}$ denotes the standard polynomial. Dixon and Pressman conjectured an explicit formula for the generic nullity of $L_{\mathbf{A}}$, and Brassil and Reichstein proved the conjecture when $k$ is even. In this paper, we settle the remaining case where $k$ is odd. Our proof first treats the boundary cases $k=2n-3$ in dimensions $n$ and $n+1$ using degree decompositions and graph-theoretic interpretations of alternating trace forms, and then establishes a dimension-extension argument from $n$ to $n+2$. Consequently, together with the result of Brassil and Reichstein, we obtain a complete proof of the Dixon-Pressman generic nullity conjecture over any field of characteristic zero.

Additive Decompositions by Conjugacy Classes in $M_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$

Let $n \geq 2$ be a positive integer, and $q$ be a prime power. We study the $number$ of additive decompositions of nonscalar matrices in the matrix ring $M_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ as sums of elements from two prescribed conjugacy classes. Let $z \in M_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ be nonscalar. We show that, except for the case $(n,q,\textrm{Tr}(z)) = (2,2,1)$, there exist conjugacy classes $X, Y \subset M_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ such that the characteristic polynomial of $X$ is irreducible of degree $n$ and the characteristic polynomial of $Y$ is of the form $ (T- \lambda) h(T)$, where $\lambda \in \mathbb{F}_q$, $h$ is irreducible of degree $n-1$ and $h(\lambda) \neq 0$. These classes can be chosen so that $\textrm{Tr}(z) = \textrm{Tr}(X) + \textrm{Tr}(Y)$. For such $X$ and $Y$, let $$ N_{X,Y}(z) = \# \{ (x,y) \in X \times Y : x + y = z \}. $$ We prove the following estimate: $$ \left| N_{X,Y}(z) - q^{(n-1)^2} \right| \leq 42 q^{(n-1)^2 -1}. $$ Thus, for nonscalar matrices with matching trace, the number of such additive decompositions is $approximately$ the same, namely $q^{(n-1)^2}$, with an absolute error constant independent of $n$ and $q$.
