Restoring Adhesion–Cohesion Balance in High Bio-Content Waterborne Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives through Itaconate Chemistry and Nanocellulose Reinforcement

Abstract

High biobased content waterborne pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) were developed via seeded semi-continuous emulsion polymerization using renewable monomers including dibutyl itaconate (DBI), 2-octyl acrylate (2-OA), isobornyl acrylate (IBOA), and isobornyl methacrylate (IBOMA), achieving biobased contents up to 78%. The incorporation of DBI significantly altered the polymer microstructure, as evidenced by changes in gel fraction and soluble molar mass, promoting greater molecular flexibility and improved fibril formation. In conventional systems, shear resistance decreased due to reduced network density. A similar balance of adhesive properties was observed in biobased formulations. To restore cohesion while preserving pressure-sensitive behavior, sulfated cellulose nanocrystals (sCNCs) were incorporated at low loadings (0.25–1.0 phm). Rheological analysis revealed an increased storage modulus (G′) while maintaining compliance below the Dahlquist criterion, enabling reinforcement without compromising tack. At 0.5–1.0 phm sCNC, shear adhesion failure temperature (SAFT) values of the high biobased systems doubled and approached those of the petroleum-based reference (∼10,000 min) while maintaining balanced peel performance (10–14 N/25 mm). These results demonstrate that combining DBI with renewable cellulose nanocrystal reinforcement provides an effective strategy for developing highly biobased waterborne PSAs that maintain balanced performance.

Silane-mediated network formation in chitosan: Viscoelasticity, porosity, and gravity-driven selective water transport with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity.

Chitosan gels possess intrinsic hydrophilicity, biocompatibility, and antibacterial characteristics, but their practical use in aqueous separation is often limited by insufficient network stability and the difficulty of combining mechanical integrity with dynamic functionality. In this work, a 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysil...

High strength tung oil-based adhesive with outstanding wet adhesion for cellulose fiber paper

The development of bio-based adhesives is hindered due to poor wet adhesion with wet substrate, limited durability, and lack of recyclability. Herein, we report an amphiphilic silane-oil adhesive synthesized via a one-step coupling reaction between (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) and tung oil anhydride (TOA). Th...

Low-carbon cork agglomerated materials via chitosan/blocked isocyanate adhesive: Cross-linking mechanism, high performance, and life cycle assessment.

Incorporating natural biological macromolecules to reduce reliance on petroleum-derived adhesives and valorize bio-wastes is a key path for achieving low-carbon manufacturing. However, the inherent hydrophobic barrier of cork restricts the interfacial wetting and penetration of traditional highly polar bio-based adhesi...

Lignin-based polyurethane coatings integrating wear resistance, anti-biofouling, and anti-corrosion performance for durable triboelectric nanogenerators

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have shown great potential for harvesting low-frequency mechanical energy in marine environments, yet their practical application is severely limited by biofouling, electrochemical corrosion, and mechanical wear, which degrade interfacial properties and reduce electrical output. Her...
