Abstract
This paper develops a normative account of the metaverse as a hybrid and pedagogically relevant form of Extended Reality (XR), thereby foregrounding the social, cognitive, and collaborative dynamics that shape virtual learning environments. Instead of locating its educational value in mere immersive simulation, the paper argues that the metaverse’s normative didactic potential lies in its capacity to enable equitable participation, distributed cognition, and cross-border interaction among diverse learners. Addressing contemporary challenges—such as algorithmic personalization, filter bubbles, commercial biases, and avatar-mediated identity formation—the paper develops a normative framework for designing XR learning spaces that support epistemic autonomy while ensuring accessibility, inclusivity, and psychological safety. A special focus is on avatars as embodied interfaces that promote representation, interaction, and collective knowledge building. The paper concludes by outlining design principles for socially responsible XR environments that promote didactic participation across varied educational contexts.
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has entered education faster than the theoretical and methodological frameworks used to evaluate it. This critical integrative review asks a more consequential question than whether GenAI ‘works’: under what pedagogical conditions can it augment learning without displacing learner agency, epistemic responsibility, and higher-order cognition? A purposive corpus of 56 distinct sources was synthesized, spanning foundational theories of experiential, sociocultural, situated, distributed, social-cognitive, cognitive-load, self-regulated, and technology-mediated learning; established technology-acceptance models; artificial-intelligence-in-education and AI-literacy frameworks; policy guidance; and empirical, systematic-review, and meta-analytic evidence published through 2026. The synthesis indicates that GenAI is most defensibly conceptualized as a fallible cognitive artifact embedded in a distributed learning system rather than as an autonomous epistemic authority. Positive effects on achievement, motivation, engagement, creativity, and higher-order thinking are increasingly supported, but they are conditional on task design, scaffolding, interaction quality, verification practices, AI literacy, and sustained human oversight. Evidence for metacognitive improvement remains weaker, while unstructured use can promote cognitive offloading, overconfidence, dependency, and integrity risks. To integrate these findings, this article proposes the Human–AI Pedagogical Agency Framework (HAPAF), composed of five interacting layers: epistemic positioning, learner agency, interaction design, verification, and governance. The framework reframes effective GenAI integration as an agency-preserving pedagogical design problem rather than a tool-adoption problem.

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has been primarily framed as an impartial educational tool. However, this framing overlooks an even larger shift: the reassignment of epistemological authority from teachers to students to machines. This paper presents a conceptual evaluation of the extent to which GenAI redistributes students'and teachers'ability to act in classrooms to produce knowledge, validate each other's claims, and create evidence of student learning while collaborating with and competing against humans. This evaluation draws on various theoretical paradigms, including Distributed Agency, Self-Determination Theory, Society 5.0, and Technology Integration Paradigms, including TPACK and SAMR. While all of the theoretical paradigms evaluated are relevant to the role of agency within education mediated by AI, none of them address the ongoing disparity regarding equitable distribution of power, ownership of the data used to mediate interaction, and accountability in relation to human-mediated interactions. As such, this paper introduces the Ecological Co-Agency Framework, which defines agency in terms of relational, regulatory, and pedagogical processes, conditioned by a defined commitment to human accountability for epistemological claims.
The findings suggest that while GenAI may enhance learner agency through personalisation and support, it also risks exacerbating educational inequalities and diminishing learner autonomy in certain contexts.

Rationale of Study – Assessment practices across African educational systems have, for the most part, remained anchored in individualised, competitive, and examination-centred models whose philosophical origins lie squarely within Western epistemological traditions. These models stand in structural tension with the Ubuntu principle of umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu, a person is a person through other persons, which positions knowledge and human development as irreducibly communal achievements. This conceptual paper argues that Ubuntu philosophy can furnish the normative and practical foundations for a genuinely African model of classroom assessment, one that is relational, collaborative, and inclusive by design rather than by accommodation.
Methodology – Drawing on a critical synthesis of Ubuntu philosophy, decolonial education theory, and contemporary assessment scholarship, the paper employs a conceptual analysis approach guided by interpretivist and decolonial epistemological commitments to develop the Ubuntu-Informed Assessment (UIA) framework.
Findings – The framework is structured around four mutually reinforcing assessment principles: relational validity, communal accountability, dialogic feedback, and epistemic inclusivity, each of which is theoretically grounded and practically articulated. The framework's internal logic and the relationships among the four principles are explicitly demonstrated.
Implications – The paper demonstrates that Ubuntu-informed assessment has transformative implications for how learning is evidenced, how feedback is structured, how the assessor-learner relationship is constituted, and how inclusion is understood in African classrooms. Implications are drawn for classroom teachers, curriculum designers, educational policymakers, and assessment theory.
Originality – This paper offers an original conceptual contribution by translating Ubuntu philosophy from its predominantly ethical and pedagogical applications into a rigorous framework for assessment theory and practice in African educational contexts.

Intercultural communication education (ICE) is often viewed as the transfer of stable knowledge, skills, and dispositions. Classroom interaction, as an important component of education, is, however, highly relational and deeply contextual. This paper proposes a novel perspective on ICE by integrating ecological psychology with complex systems theory: the former explains what intercultural communication learning consists of—attuned, skilled, and agentic coordination with affordances in situated practices—while the latter explains how such coordination evolves nonlinearly within nested, history-sensitive systems. This paper proposes that, instead of storing decontextualised content, learners need to coordinate with people, using tools, norms, and spaces; behaviour emerges nonlinearly from person-task-setting couplings across nested timescales. When institutional, pedagogical, personal, and physical sub-contexts are aligned around these principles, ICE can move beyond checklist competence to cultivate ethically responsive, adaptable, and inclusive intercultural agency. This paper concludes with a research agenda on operational taxonomies, transparent design reporting, and modelling of course-lesson-interaction couplings. In short, intercultural communication competence may not be something learners acquire, but rather something learners gradually develop. By carefully designing the ecology, learners start to enact intercultural knowledge and sensitivity.
