FROM AFRICAN RENAISSANCE TO ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: RECONSTRUCTING AFRICAN-IGBO INDIGENOUS VALUES FOR ETHICAL GOVERNANCE, HUMAN DEVELOPMENT, AND SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION IN NIGERIA

Abstract

The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) as a dominant force in global governance, development practice, and social organisation raises urgent philosophical questions for African societies. Whereas mainstream AI discourse tends to privilege Western liberal frameworks, this article contends that the African Renaissance project, long concerned with the recovery and revaluation of indigenous thought, offers a compelling philosophical foundation for contextualising AI within African ethical life. Drawing specifically on Igbo indigenous values, including onye aghala nwanne ya (no one abandons a kinsperson), communal solidarity, elder wisdom, and restorative justice, this paper argues that the integration of AI into Nigerian governance and development must be mediated by these values if it is to serve the common good. The article examines three domains of application: ethical governance, human development, and social transformation. It contends that governance frameworks built exclusively on algorithmic efficiency risk eroding participatory culture and deepening inequality, unless grounded in principles of accountability and communal wellbeing drawn from the Igbo philosophical tradition. Through a normative-reconstructive methodology, the study proposes that AI adoption in Nigeria should be guided by a value-laden ethical architecture that treats technology not as a neutral instrument but as a social artefact requiring moral orientation. The paper concludes that Africa’s engagement with AI need not be reactive or imitative; rather, the African Renaissance tradition provides the intellectual resources for a distinctly African response to the challenges and opportunities of the AI era.
