Managing Flow Challenges of Mature Production Wells Through Unconventional Gas Lifting Strategy: An FPSO Case Study

Abstract

Mature deep-water production wells are exposed to enormous flow assurance challenges, as well as reduced productivity index and performance over time. One of the most common flow assurance challenges, especially for deep water wells tied to a production facility, includes well slugging due to increasing water production, depleting reservoir pressure, and a reduction in the gas-oil ratio. While conventional gas lifting methods are one of the most reliable options for enhancing productivity, production wells that were not designed with the gas lift option may suffer significant production losses and flow challenges due to increasing water production, which could lead to well shut-ins and revenue loss. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate how the use of unconventional gas lift methods can enhance production optimization in high-water-cut wells tied to a Floating Production Storage and Offloading facility. The paper adopted a mixed-methods data gathering approach, which involves the utilization of representative field production data and practical field experience as primary data sources, while reviewing technical theories and qualitative data from research and peer-reviewed papers on the subject matter as secondary data sources. The paper successfully demonstrated how a practical and unconventional strategy was employed for gas lifting of high-water production wells, effectively managed well slugging problems, and enhanced the field production optimization effort of deep-water wells tied to a production facility. The unconventional strategy, which yielded about 700 bpd increase in oil production from the mature assets, could be deployed by operators as a temporary solution to manage flow issues and optimize well production, considering the significant cost savings and minimal technical modifications required when compared to other production enhancement methods for subsea wells.

Reducing Water While Preserving Oil: A Case Study Retrofitting Vertical Wells with Autonomous Inflow Control Devices

Mature vertical oil wells frequently experience increasing water production as a result of water coning, reservoir heterogeneity, and preferential inflow from high-mobility water-bearing intervals. The resulting increase in water handling and artificial-lift requirements can substantially increase operating costs and...

Artificial Lift System in Niger-Delta Oil and Gas Production: A Review

Artificial Lift is the method of introducing energy to a flow channel within completion jewelry to improve flow rate. This is done to when the inflow performance relation (IPR) is less than VLP. Artificial lift systems are essential in sustaining production from mature oil and gas wells where natural reservoir energ...

CO2 Injection for Enhanced Recovery and Storage in Fractured Bottom-Water Gas Reservoir—A Case Study of the B9 Gas Field

Fractured bottom-water gas reservoirs are prone to water channeling during production, leading to gas well flooding and reduced recovery. This study takes the B9 gas reservoir in the Tarim Basin as the research object and employs numerical simulation methods to conduct collaborative optimization research on early water...

Multi-Objective Optimization of Gas Compression, Flare Recovery, and Production Efficiency in Mature Oil and Gas Fields

Mature oil fields face falling reservoir pressure, rising gas-oil ratios and compression systems sized for earlier conditions. As a result, usable gas is often flared. This study develops a multi-objective framework that jointly optimizes booster compression capacity, compressor driver type, separator suction pressure,...

Reversing Severe Depletion in a Late-Start Light-Oil Waterflood Through Field-Scale High-VRR Pressure Recovery

The X Field is a light-oil sandstone development producing from the Upper Gharif Formation at approximately 3,100 m TVDSS. The original field development plan was based on an inverted five-spot waterflood pattern with injection scheduled to commence in 2020. However, water injection was delayed until January 2023 due...
