Abstract
Can a language model estimate its familiarity with an entity before generating an answer? We study activations at the final prompt token in twelve instruction-tuned models from the Bielik, PLLuM, Gemma-4, and Qwen3 families, using a new dataset of 1,440 Polish entities spanning four domains and ten Wikipedia-pageview deciles, plus fabricated controls. Familiarity-probe scores separate real from fabricated entities in every family; in the Polish-adapted Bielik and PLLuM families they additionally track entity popularity (model-mean Spearman $\rho$ 0.28-0.57, versus at most 0.11 in Gemma-4 and Qwen3), a pattern more strongly associated with Polish adaptation than with parameter count in this model sample. In Gemma-4-12B, the only model that natively refuses, adding a one-dimensional familiarity direction at a single layer moves refusal rates monotonically in both directions (0.24 to 1.00 on well-known entities; 0.73 to 0.00 on unknown ones). Finally, a calibrated familiarity probe is competitive among pre-generation abstention gates, although post-generation detectors better predict behavioral error on average. These results support a graded pre-generation entity-familiarity readout, and a separation between representational familiarity and the policy that converts it into abstention.
We approach a cognitive simulation perspective on episodic and semantic memory in multiple-choice question answering by incorporating text from individual text corpora (ITC) into retrieval-augmented generation and DoRA fine-tuning. We web-crawl the search histories of 515 participants who answered 36 multiple-choice knowledge items and analyze a stratified subsample of 150 participants. For each participant, one DoRA adapter consolidates their ITC into a small language model (SLM) whose baseline correctness falls below the participants'lowest quartile. The adapter measurably writes the ITC into the weights: it fits its own participant's held-out text better than other participants'texts (dz =1.27), an individuality effect that increases with ITC size in rank order. On the generalized knowledge test, however, the adapter adds knowledge rather than alignment with the individual: log-loss match improves, whereas match accuracy under a bias-corrected PMI readout does not, and retrieval adds nothing on top. Our results demonstrate that ITCs can be consolidated into the weights of SLMs, an encouraging basis for individualized tutoring agents, and we discuss how to move from there toward a realistic simulation of episodic and semantic memory at the individual level.

Diffusion Large Language Models (dLLMs) generate text via bidirectional iterative denoising, naturally supporting user-specified constraints anchored at arbitrary output positions, a paradigm known as In-place Prompting (IPP). We formalize this as the In-place Instruction Following (IIF) task and construct IIF-Bench, a hierarchical benchmark spanning literal, style, and discourse-function constraints, paired with a rubric-based local-global evaluation protocol. An inference-time attention-bias probe suggests that vanilla dLLMs often under-prioritize constraint spans during denoising. We then propose GRAFT, an IPP-oriented post-training framework combining constraint-aware SFT and preference optimization. On four representative dLLMs, GRAFT raises the average IIF score from 57.75 to 73.10 (+15.35 points), with absolute gains of 15.91 and 15.57 points on literal and discourse-function constraints, while preserving general generation ability.

This work presents the first systematic study of inverse relation directionality in LLMs, using a benchmark consisting of 5,457 instances spanning 27 distinct inverse relation labels and reveals systematic asymmetries in inverse relation classification across LLMs.
Local definitions can assign a familiar word a temporary meaning while its usual associations remain useful elsewhere. We measure interference from those associations with a matched Stroop-style paradigm. A conflict prompt defines doctor as forest and compares forest with the familiar associate hospital. A neutral control replaces doctor with a semantically weak word in both the definition and query while keeping forest and hospital fixed. All 11 model-level means are positive. Aggregate means are also positive for all four conflict families and prompt formats. When no redefinition is present, a stronger preference for the familiar distractor predicts more interference in arbitrary-semantic, polysemy/entity, and domain-definition remappings, while the antonym slope is null. Separately, we patch neutral-control activations into antonym prompts in five 1B-2B models. Patching the defined word, the target word in the definition, and the later query word together restores almost all of the target-minus-distractor margin lost in conflict (normalized recovery R in [0.92,1.06]). Replacing only that target-word activation with a donor from another item reduces recovery in every tested case. Those donor patches also lower the distractor logit, while the contextual target falls much more than under the same-item patch that restores the margin.
