Abstract

Peanut shells from Shanxi Province were used as the biomass feedstock to prepare three red-mud-modified biochars at red mud-to-peanut-shell mass ratios of 1:1 (RMBC1), 1:5 (RMBC2), and 1:10 (RMBC3) through suspension loading followed by pyrolysis. Their adsorption behavior and mechanisms for removing Cu2+ from aqueous solution were systematically investigated. The optimal initial pH for Cu2+ adsorption was 6. The adsorption capacity increased with the initial Cu2+ concentration, and adsorption approached equilibrium within 240 min. Adsorption performance improved with increasing red-mud content. RMBC1 exhibited the highest experimental adsorption capacity (36.23 mg/g), which was 1.67 times that of pristine biochar. The equilibrium data were described more closely by the Langmuir model than by the Freundlich model, whereas the kinetic data were described most closely by the pseudo-second-order model. SEM, XRD, and FTIR analyses indicated that Cu2+ immobilization was governed primarily by surface complexation and may also involve interface-mediated mineral precipitation, together with ion exchange and other mineral-associated reactions.

Methylene Blue Adsorption by Standard Rice Husk Biochars: Evaluation of Process Variables Through Experimental Design

Rice husk-derived biochars produced at 550 °C and 700 °C were evaluated for methylene blue adsorption from aqueous solutions using a full factorial experimental design. The effects of pH (7–9), initial dye concentration (25–75 mg L−1), and adsorbent mass (0.05–0.15 g) and their interactions were systematically analyzed...

Removal of copper and lead ions by red mud-metakaolin based geopolymer microspheres: Insights into the efficient preparation and adsorption mechanisms

This study used red mud and metakaolin as the main raw material, with sodium silicate as the alkali activator. Red mud-metakaolin based geopolymer microspheres (RM-MGMs) with good sphericity and high mechanical strength are prepared via dispersion-suspension-solidification method. By investigating the adsorption pe...

Adsorption of Methyl Orange onto Peanut Shell-Derived Activated Carbon: Characterization, Isotherms, and Kinetic Behavior

Driven by the need to develop innovative solutions for wastewater treatment and to reduce waste generation, this study proposes the valorization of agricultural residues, specifically peanut shells, as a precursor for the synthesis of surface-area activated carbon (AC) through chemical activation with KOH (ratio 1:3)....

Study on the Performance of Wheat Straw Biochar in Adsorbing Methyl Orange in Water

Methyl orange (MO), an anionic azo dye commonly found in textile wastewater, is resistant to conventional treatment due to its refractory nature. Adsorption offers a cost-effective alternative, and wheat straw, an abundant agricultural residue, was used to prepare activated biochar. When tested with 40 mg/L MO at pH 7...
